Newcomer / Intro RES observations for the night

Saw a "green" system authority Cobra MK 3 being wanted and shot down today. So, I guess, even the police sometimes get shot down due to friendly fire incidents.

On a less amusing note, I snuggled up with an asteroid after about 2M of bounty hunting (and thinking I should stop at the station for that reason). Somehow, that hurts. My hull was on 85% before the impact, and I had full shields. But, yeah, an asteroid is an asteroid. Better luck tomorrow.

I'm still a little confused if an 'ally' has a bounty in their home system whether it damages your rep by taking it down?

On another note, I had a really exciting time yesterday. My greed made me try to last hit an anaconda with no shields in a RES. I ran to the nearest base with 2 minutes O2 to spare. So happy to have made it back. Then realised the station did not have outfitting or repair, so had to make another trip with 7.5 min of O2 to find a station to get the repair. Was exciting and felt the whole range of emotions making it to the station, thinking I was safe, then having to do it again! I was proud of myself for remembering to cash my bounties at the first station so that even if I died, I was breaking even.

I'm not sure- I was once in a warzone with two Imperial-affiliated factions, and wasn't sure which to back. I didn't see any signs of rep loss, despite destroying quite a few ships claiming to be "Imperial Navy". However, take that with a pinch of salt- these things are rarely consistent.

If the target is wanted by its own faction (major or minor) there is no reputation loss for killing it. If the target isn't wanted by its own faction, you lose rep.

So if you see a target showing as wanted in Empire space and it belongs to an Empire faction, no rep loss. If it belonged to a Federation faction, you might or might not lose rep with the Federation, depending on if the target was also wanted by them or not.

I was in a RES tonight and saw a "wanted" ship. I fired on it and immediately got a bounty... and security started shooting at me. I barely got away.... I'm so confused

I understood conflict zones to either have minimal repercussions or no repercussions at all in your reputation. It's difficult to quantify, though, as when I fight in combat zones I've already picked my side well in advance (I only fly for Communist factions) and have usually been killing enemy ships in open space for a while before the conflict starts.

That was my understanding too. I usually ignore my faction's wanted ships in a RES though just to be on the safe side - if you learn never to shoot greens, you reduce the chances of those pesky friendly fire incidents that make EVERY SYSAUTH VESSEL WITHIN 70 LIGHT YEARS decide that you're public enemy number 1 with your 300cr bounty.

Was in a RES, racking up the kills and accidentally shot a sector ship. They proceeded to disable my engines and left me drifting in space, spinning like a top. Now what do I do?

1. You must wait until the basic scan completes fully (it actually must show "Wanted" in the bottom left of the screen - even if they are wanted, if you shoot before you KNOW they are wanted, you get a bounty). The bottom left of the screen shows their criminal status in the local jurisdiction.

2. If you Kill Warrant Scan, you can see the combined bounty in all jurisdictions, but unless they are wanted in the local jurisdiction (or the local jurisdiction is an anarchy) you will get a bounty for attacking them, even if they are wanted elsewhere in the galaxy.

Not exactly correct. The rep is primarily driven by minor factions. Imagine you are in the system with two Empire factions, say Patron's Principles and Empire League. Let's say Empire league is the controlling faction in the system. You can then shoot the Empire League wanted ships without decrease in your reputation. You will, actually, get a rep increase when you cash in the bounty. Shoot a wanted Patron's Principles and you WILL take a rep hit with Patron's Principles. The net effect of your standing with the Empire is unclear, though.
