Proposal Discussion Resin scale models of the ships

I would love to have (high quality) resin scale model kits of the ships in Elite Dangerous, like the Fine Molds Star Wars ones.

A 1:72 scale would be lovely but then the larger ships would be too large so I guess around 1:144...aargh, that would still make the Anaconda model about 3,9m :/

Anyway...as long as they are in the same scale so they can be placed next to one another on the shelf :)

So what do you guys think?

I would love some scale models, however for me they would not necessarily have to be in scale, perhaps the smaller ships in one scale, and the bigger ones in another. Otherwise the small ships could be tiny! :p

I would totally love some models.

Scale would be really difficult. You would have to draw a line and make the big ships a different scale.

It would be interesting if the big ships came with a bonus model of a smaller ship (like a Cobra), in correct scale to the big ship, just so you could see the difference.

But a model of a Cobra at 1:72 or thereabouts would be great. A Viper too.

You could buy scale models during the Kickstarter but they were mentally expensive as in £500 from memory. There has also been a sneak peak of a model in another thread.

Edit: Here you go, it was a peek of the week in the Private backers forum

I mentioned something similar in passing in another thread.

An Airfix (or suchlike) 1:72 scale model of the Cobra MkIII next to my models of the Space Shuttle and Millenium Falcon would be brilliant!

I forgot about that, not that it matters, no chance of justifying those prices to myself. :(

Could use logarithmic scaling :p

Edit: although i was joking, after some calculations it could actually work.
Assuming we use a logarithmic scale on base of 'e'.
And we set the size of the sidewinder as a base for all other ships to extrapolate the sizes from.
If size of sidewinder is 'e' then we would get 1 , or we could call it scale 1:1
An anaconda is about 10 times as long as a sidewinder, so we set the size to '10*e'
This would get us a 3.3 for the anaconda, or scale 3.3:1 , meaning the anaconda model is 3.3 times larger than a sidewinder.
A cobra at a size of 50 around meters, or 2.5 times a sidewinder would get a scale of 1.9:1
If we were to build a model of an orbis station at a size of 8 km, then we would get scale 7:1

These are just the ratios really, after that you have to decide how big a 1:1 sidewinder should be as a model and calculate the other model sizes from there.

Resin cast in a silicone mould will pick up insane amounts of detail. Fairly straightforward to do at home if you buy the right materials.

You are incredibly wrong on this by the way ;)

That's great news Mike. I used to make metal alloy miniatures by hand and when resin came along I saw a massive drop in commercial standards. That was many moons ago... I am so excited about the models. I really can't wait to get my hands on them. You have put my worries to rest. Happy happy joy joy! I now have a reason after many years to buy a toy space ship! Well done.

When can I get my hands on one?

Completely missed this thread when I posted a similar topic earlier on, so I'll just put it in here:

I watching Chris Roberts award a lucky Gamescom attendee an 8in Constellation model on the Star Citizen stage event and I thought to myself "I would love to have a Cobra MKIII sitting on my desk..."

What I was thinking was die cast models of spacecraft (or maybe even the stations?). I think that 6/8 inches would be a good size for display on shelves or desks.

Once upon a time there was a great site that gave you the points and lines to make the models out of paper. I did quite a few and if your're pretty good at coloring and drawing you could make them look really nice. I'd love to have that link again but yes as an avid collector of small ship models (micromachine star wars & star trek) I'd love to have some elite ships in my collection.

Have you seen the latest Star Trek Starship models that came out about a year or two ago? they're incredible and I do believe those are made out of metal too.

I see your wish, I am also engaged in creating ship models, really appreciate this hobby) there are a great number of different models are proposed, so it is possible to choose something to your liking) as for me, I am dealing with 1/180 HMS Victory 1765 - Airfix, I hope to take part at the competition with it) so try to perform it as perfect as it is possible!

Get yourself a 3D printer, grab the model data from the game, convert to a 3D format for 3D Studio or whatever and get printing.

For the price of those models in this thread, you could buy a 3D printer and make them all.

The fans over at mechwarrior online have done just that, the models look amazing too!

I have seen that the star citizen guys have extracted the ships from that, so would expect models soon.

I must admit I am very surprised I haven't seen any one extract the elite: dangerous 3D models yet, this community not as technically minded you reckon? Or are FD much better at encrypting their files?
