General / Off-Topic Restored Horton 229 " Stealth Bomber" Prototype pics

So I'm a bit of an airplane nut and the other day I came across some pictures of what might be the most beautiful airplane I've seen in my life. This was a prototype for a Stealth Bomber the N.a.z.i.'s (strange that you can't write N.a.z.i. on this website) were working on during the war, but it never actually flew as far as I know. The Smithsonian has restored the prototype, and it is stunning.

The first thing I thought when I saw it was "I want to fly this in elite". Just look at the tail and those incredibly long wings, and I love where the engines are situated. The truth is though, it has little practical application as a spaceship, no need for wings like that. Who knows though, maybe a ship specialized for atmospheric flight? ;) Maybe you incredible artists over at Frontier can take some inspiration from the Horton 229.

While that is a very pretty design, If we're talking delta wing bombers.. There really can only be one winner in my opinion.

Wow, that Horton 229 really is beautiful.

You know, a Cobra doesn't look all that much removed from that design, some mods and adjustments and that could be a MKV...

Z...

Thanks a lot, I guess the problem came from trying to post the whole album maybe, now the images are here.

If we're going to be talking about Delta wings, we need to talk about the Avro Arrow. One of the first (if not the first) Delta wing Interceptor ever designed. It was far ahead of it's time, able to travel at mach 3 and travel up to 80,000 feet where most other fighters could go mach 1 and had a ceiling of about 50,000 feet. Completely designed and built in Canada, it was the pride of our nation and a true show of Canadian air superiority. Unfortunately, under pressure from the Americans to buy American fighters, the Canadian government scrapped the project after only 5 were built. Amazingly though, Since there's has been a huge scandal with the Canadian Gov. buying new F-35's, which have gone way over budget, and don't actually perform very well, there's has been a call to resurrect the Avro Arrow. Even today, it would travel farther, faster, and higher than the f-35, plus be about half the price.

Echos of the TSR2....

It's not about delta wings though, it's a flying wing (no tailplanes). Something the Americans wouldn't be able to do until the 80s.

Indeed. I also have had the pleasure of being up close to the Vulcan on a dozen occasions thanks to a dad who was an airport fireman and took me to all the shows back in the 80's and unfortunately more recently at Shoreham last year too.

Additionally, I have walked around one of the surviving TSR2 airframes at RAF Cosford. A very sleek looking aircraft,as is the Arrow.

Both good prospects and both scraped by governments who then went on to spend way more buying other peoples planes.

Good effort.
