Retrievable black box after player ship destruction

I think it would be super neat if players could have the chance to find and salvage the black box of their previous ship if it is destroyed.

It would also save a lot of heartache if someone was out exploring and had gathered many hours of cartographic and biological data.

I know that it is the theme of some Odyssey missions, so at least there's some framework there to attach this idea to.

It would certainly be exciting and a relief to know that you have the possibility of locating your black box and salvaging it. Perhaps there could be points where there are some NPC hostiles there hoping to salvage it themselves.

To stop this being just a way to reduce the incentive to fly carefully the Blackbox would have to be persistent so other commanders could find and collect it.

As an aside this is an idea that I haven’t seen raised for a while.

That opens up an interesting gameplay possibility (whose desirability is debatable); gank returning explorers to steal their data.

This could be fun. If it were made publicly visible there could races to grab black boxes to steal and hand in the data. It would make hunting explorers a viable option though, which might force more explorers into Solo if they aren't already (not that I have an issue with mode choice).

With PP2 pretty much getting rid of merit loss on death and even rebuy costs, it would be really interesting if exploration/exobio data losses on death are the next frustration point to be looked at.

I think opening it up to any player to find is fair, especially given that most of these events will likely happen in deep space where your nearest neighbour is probably going to be a fellow explorer. Also fair that a salvager can pocket the money but the explorer gets the discovery credit.
