Newcomer / Intro Returning Commander Confirming Rebuild Process

Greetings Commanders. Explored in Horizons for a few years or so and halted about a year ago. REALLY enjoyed it. I did buy Odyssey, installed and configured it, explored awhile and then just walked away. It was obvious where Fdev was going. That was about a year ago. Going to give it a fair try out again and see where it's at. From looking around the last week it appears even the dedicated exploration squadrons and groups have become obsessed with killing aliens. Wish to confirm the best process here would be to back up binds, log into Frontier account, download the launcher from downloadable products page. Once that is done should I first launch Odyssey, let it update, look around and see if everything is where I think I left it. Would I then close Odyssey, and choose Legacy from the launcher to get into Horizons 3.8? A bunch of decisions to work through here, but I want to give exploration in Odyssey a fair shake before considering plan B or C. I'm one who believes its just a matter of a year to eighteen months and Horizons will go away, along with a good percentage of other games on the fence as costs are cut. Big time. Thanks for any direction here. Appreciated.

It really depends what you want from the game. I'll try to summarize both options objectively without too much personal preference.

Your old CMDR will be split in two as soon as you launch the current versions: one “legacy” CMDR, one “live” CMDR. Both are not connected, but will feature everything your old CMDR had before the split: all ranks, all the money, all ships, etc. Let’s say you bought a Cutter a year ago. If you log into Horizons 3.8, your legacy CMDR is “active” and will still own your Cutter, just like you would expect. If you sell it, your legacy CMDR gets the money back. Now, if you log out and into Ody 4.0, your live CDMR is “active” and will still own your old Cutter. Everything you do after the split will only affect one of the two CMDRs. If your live CMDR reaches a new rank, your legacy CMDR does not. And vice versa.

Horizons 3.8 Legacy
  • Completely independent from Odyssey 4.0: BGS, market prices, factions, Powerplay, etc. still work across all game modes (open, group, solo), but have no connection to any actions done in 4.0
  • Very stable, high FPS
  • Classic visuals, classic planetary surfaces, classic lighting effects, etc.
  • Classic user interface
  • No Thargoid war. In fact, no story updates at all
  • No Community Goals
  • No Odyssey gameplay: exobiology, concourses, Apex shuttles, on-foot missions, settlements, etc.
  • Still supported by 3rd party tools like ED Discovery and EDMC
  • No support from websites like Inara or EDSM
One could argue that 3.8 now is a truly open sandbox game without narrative interference. It’s up to you to decide if that’s good or bad.

Odyssey 4.0 Live
  • Completely independent from Horizons 3.8, see above
  • Not as stable as 3.8, but very MUCH improved compared to its abysmal launch
  • Lower FPS than 3.8, broadly speaking
  • New planetary surfaces, new lighting model & effects, etc.
  • New user interface
  • Thargoid war, story progression with coming updates 15 and 16
  • Community Goals
  • New Odyssey gameplay, see above
  • Supported by 3rd party tools like ED Discovery and EDMC
  • Supported by websites like Inara and EDSM
I might have missed some points, but I hope you get the picture. Your plan of looking around in Odyssey first to see if you like it sounds good to me. If you don’t like it, you can always play in 3.8. But whatever you choose, be aware that all your progress in one version stays in this version.

There are quite a few 3.8 players here, like @Old Duck for example. But from what I've seen, the majority of players moved to 4.0, however.

Just an FYI there is a thread about players sticking to (or at least doing stuff in) 3.8 here:

You want to play Horizons 4.0. Legacy is its own universe now that's played by people that can't or won't update.
Horizons 4.0 has added enough perfomance issues (and an unusable galaxy map) that I had to make the choice of wasting my gaming time exploring a galaxy that doesn't matter, or just taking a break until I have a more powerful PC. I chose the latter.

The maps and the outfitting screen were awkward at first for me mainly because I had had ages to get used to the old layouts. Now I can do things just fine with them, there are still things where I have to think and look for some command but that was the case before.

The ability to easily set and remove favourites from the bookmarks is such an improvement.
