Returning graphics settings to normal after the patch.

I was one who edited my graphicsconfiguration.xml to set the Engine trails to zero, rather than setting FX quality to off, as a workaround before this FPS fix.

Now I logged in and tried to switch it back, only to find that the Graphicsconfiguration.XML already had engine trails set in the various quality levels. (0, 1, 2, 3)

Did the update reset my graphicsconfiguration.xml ? Now I'm a little unsure if I'm in the wrong file, but no other files I can find have any of those settings in them. I'm not super familiar with all these files so I want to make sure I didn't do something wrong.

I did try deleting the file, assuming the game would generate a new one when I launched, but it didn't; threw and error and told me to reinstall the game. So I put it back.

Am I all set? I did launch briefly and seems like I could see engine trails, and I didn't have any drops to 40fps in the station like before. Are things normal and it fixed the settings for me? Had I like, somehow failed to change them in the first place? I'm confused.

Changes applied to the core config files in the main game directory are reverted any time you update the game or manually validate game files. This is one of the reasons why I prefer to use the override file, rather than the core files, for most changes. Only major rewrites to the shadow profiles or disabling things like the experimental lighting updates really need to be done in the GraphicsConfiguration.xml proper.

Not really related, but is there a guide to editing the graphics file? I have a problem where whatever I do ED reverts settings to default, and I'd like to set some options without having to keep doing that each time I log in.

Hmm. So I've seen references to the override files, but my override file has basically nothing in it; just a couple lines. Is that something I have to populate?

In any case, it sounds like I'm fine because the update replaced my file as it should have.

Sounds like the override is what you're wanting to edit. But don't ask me!

Yes, it's either missing or empty by default.

It does what the name implies, anything you stick in it is used instead of the corresponding entry in the main GraphicsConfiguration.xml. You don't need to fully populate it, as anything missing is just assumed to be default...hence the override part. Formatting is important though. You need the right headings and indentation for it to be parsed correctly.

A guide in what sense? What the variables do, or how to manipulate the file.

What specific issues are you having? Nothing should revert anything in the GraphicsConfiguration.xml unless you validate the files. The launcher only does this manually or after an update. I don't use Steam so I don't know what it might be doing, but I'd imagine there would be a way to tell it to stop checking files.

A guide as what to change- I have a vague recollection you made a post regarding beyond high / ultra settings or something along those lines. I use the normal launcher (no steam) and my PC has all permissions set correctly. Just each time I start ED the changes I made from last time revert back. I've tried everything I can think of.

I'd check disk/filesystem integrity, make sure GraphicsConfig.xml isn't hidden or read only, and see that whatever account you are running the launcher with has full permissions for the main game directory.

As for what to change, a reasonably detailed explanation of all known options would require far more work than I'm willing to do, but I can link you to some threads on the topic and/or suggest specific changes if you have some specific goal in mind.

Thats the stuff- thanks!
