Newcomer / Intro Returning player from 2014. What's new?

Hello Elite community!
My name's Jacob. I'm 25 years old and I live in Sweden. I purchased the game back in 2014 when the game was in its Beta phase. Because of me studying at university I simply had very little or no time to play at all. So I sadly didn't get to play it much after starting to study. I recently came into contact with the game again now in 2018 on an MMO site. Summer holidays are coming up and I thought what better way to start off than to play a good space sim MMO.

My question to you is what is the main change from 2014? I understand there's been loads of improvements and updated features so I'm curious to see what state the game is in now. Also, is there any expansion pack I need to purchase to enjoy the game fully? I purchased a Beta pack for 60 euros back in 2014 and I want to know if I'm all set for the experience or if there's something I need purchase?

I look forward to getting you more thoroughly and I hope that my visit here will be permanent for many years to come. //Jacob.

There has been one expansion released which you probably have to purchase (if you want, but it is very good) - it is called Horizons.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Hello Commander! Welcome back in the cockpit :)

A lot has changed since 2014, I don't think there is an easy way to sum it all up...

Have a look here for the main features: https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/seasons/ and here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/74-Patch-Notes for details.
All right I'll check that out. Thanks for the tip about checking the patch notes.

Yeah, Horizons seems great. It certainly brings a whole new dimension to the game. It almost seems essential, especially if you want to stay relevant in PvP.
Adjö! :)

Hello and welcome back! If you've clicked the links you will have already seen a lot has happened since Beta and I think most players would agree there have been big improvements even if some aspects have proved to be endlessly controversial to say the least! It would be a crime not to obtain the Horizons expansion as it gives so much more such as Planetary Landings and Engineers.

There are some very experienced players here happy to help if they can. As Chris Simon said in another thread there is no such thing as a stupid question, Take your time to set up the controls as there are many options which you will probably want to tweak to your liking. Using the tutorials as a safety net means you can experiment and practice the basics without worry. If you are struggling try Hell Razor's mentoring service, guaranteed results!

Assuming you are using the same account as before, I have some good news! As an original Beta player your ship insurance will be permanently lower for any ship you buy now and anything new that arrives!
The standard insurance covers 95% of the total value leaving 5% to pay if your ship is destroyed. For us, Beta player insurance is 96% or 4% to pay. (Alpha backers got an even better deal).
That difference can add up to a few million on the bigger ships where expensive upgrades push the value right up. In your right hand panel you'll see the rebuy cost under your total credits and under the finance tab it shows your balance with the insurance % underneath, which should show 96% for you.

The other good news is beta backers received certain system permits automatically as a thank you. Most notable of these is Shinrarta Dehzra, home of The Pilots Federation and Founder's World and where you'll find Jameson Memorial. Unlike all other stations and bases, every ship and every module that's currently possible to obtain in the game is stocked there, all with a 10% discount! (Li-Yong Rui controlled systems give 15% which is great but not everything will be there). So it's as good a place as any to make your "Home" base as it's fairly central within the bubble. Non Alpha and Beta players have to achieve one of the Elite ranks before they are issued a permit for it. Good luck and fly safe o7.
