Newcomer / Intro Returning player - is the game solo/PvE friendly online now?

Hi guys, thinking about burning some Corona-hours in ED. I only got the base game originally & was just wondering if it's gotten any more 'friendly' towards solo PvE carebears like myself ;).
I still like to socialise here & there, but generally end up playing mostly solo PvE in most mmos, for various reasons (time limited, over-competitive, grumpy old , single child syndrome ;).

Anyway, will I quickly come across other friendly and/or non-friendly players in the starter areas, and would you recommend joining a guild/clan or some other group to be able to find like-minded PvErs from down-under...? Yeah, yeah, I know, don't fly anything you can't afford to lose, blah, blah, blah (I'd play EVE if that's what I wanted to put up with!). And if I drove my car using the same principal I never would have left my garage or gotten a license in the first place lol!

I don't understand. IMHO the game was always very friendly for solo/PvE players. What problems did you encounter when playing solo/PvE?

Just that I was always concerned about the open world PvP turning into a bit of a gankfest. Really can't abide little readheaded stepchildren sociopaths ruining my gaming day! :)

If you stay on Solo mode or Private Group mode (join a player group like Mobius) you'll be fine. Even in Open mode if you avoid a handful of popular systems like Shinrarta Dehzra, some engineers bases, etc in Open (switch to Solo if you need to go there) you'll maybe stumble into a ganker once a year or so.

Welcome back!

@@@07

I don't bother with open. I got ganked once and it was unpleasant. Solo is more than good enough for me and a joy to play.

Ok fellow pilots, newb & veteran alike, I'm back finally, with a vengeance...or rather, the sound of mining lasers chippin LTDs off rocks!

Playing solo, just made my first million with the Cobra Mk III recently & the last run I managed to squirrel away 7Ts of LTDs which I sold at a nearby carrier (my god they're bugged!), for 1.3mill each, for a cool total of 11.2m to date! :) On to the next mining magnate masterpiece...perhaps a Mk IV...or would you recommend an Asp Exp with modest accouterments perhaps? I still want to be able to outrun those pesky NPC pirates whenever I have to. I had one pee-in-my-pants moment on my first LTD mining run when I forgot that if you supercruise to a new ring spot...well...you get scanned all over again, ahem. Just got away with 21% hull left he he.

No idea why the game didn't grab me all those years ago, but I've got the bug now that I've given it a decent shot. Any/all advice on how to progress from here would be greatly appreciated.

Dang, the cruiser I parked on last night jumped 367LYs from Borann lol! Guess I'll have to invest in a fuel scoop now & make my way back. I expect the cartographic data should make it worth the exercise, plus lesson learnt - you can't trust a multi-billionaire ever has your best interests at heart! :)

You could try a T6 if you're just surface lasering LTDs. It can carry a lot of cargo/limpets and it's a cheap ship to buy. It's also pretty nimble.

As to advice on how to progress, I'd ask - what do you enjoy doing? Go and do that. There are so many ways to enjoy the game, it's almost impossible to answer.

  • Do you like mining? Continue with that and make yourself a fortune in an LTD3 spot.
  • Exploring? Get a decent explorer ship - opinion vary on these but I'd go DBX/AspX/Phantom - and just take off into the unknown and paint your name all over loads of systems.
  • Like a good scrap? Fit out a pugilist - maybe a Vulture - and play with the pirates in a hazardous extraction site.

Have fun!

Thanks for all that mate. I generally like most gameplay that's challenging bur rewarding, so you can see yourself progressing & improving, be it levels, gear, money, etc.
I really have an aversion to PvP, as the gankers never fight fair so I'm more than happy to stick to solo.I will try my hand at some combar vs NPC pirates at some stage, once I can afford a 'disposable' fairly cheap & half-decent combat ship which I can deck out to be effective relatively affordaly, so that 5% is trvial while I practice & learn. The vulture sounds good, but at almos 5mill I think I'd rather start of with a Cobra or Viper Mk IV or even an Imp Eagle perhaps...? All quite cheap to insure when the inevitable happens ;).

May try the Type 6 once I can comfortably afford the 3.25m I need to kit it out for LTD surface mining, as it will have over double the cargo cap of my Cobra (48 vs 20). Although I've just been able to set up a Cobra Mv IV with the edsy.org outfitter for just under 3mill, which might be even better - it has 64 cargo weiging in at just under 3mill, prob due to having 10 internal slots, whereas the T6 can only manage 48 cargo due to having only 8 internal slots. Decision, decisions...

If you're going LTD mining, it won't take long to amass quite a few credits. One thing to be aware of though, is how much you'll be able to carry/equip once you've fitted the prospector and collector limpet controllers plus limpets which go into your cargo hold...

Dang it, can't get a Cobra Mk IV - only for special people who bought Horizons early :(.
Ok, so the Keelback looks like next best thing & it will cost about 5.8m with all the modules I'd like, for a total of 64 cargo, which is triple the Cobra Mk III...is it worth it you reckon?
Here's the loadout I'm thinking of: edsy.org Keelback Miner

A quick look at your build... only thing I can see immediately is the E rated thrusters and sensors. At least D rate those for lightweight, or A rate the engines for better evasion. Do you have engineer acces?

The Keelback is a good solid little ship which comes with the option of paying a fortune to a Ship Launched Fighter pilot.
As @Tyres O’Flaherty said the E rated modules are a concern I would look to be changing them and the shields as follows which not only will improve the handling but also the jump range.

I second the suggestion that you D rate those aforementioned slots. Also note that, unless things have changed you need to add a Detailed Surface Scanner to identify hotspots in planetary ring systems before you mine them.

Cheers guys will do. Do I need the DSS if I've done it once & am only returning the the same planet/rings...? Edit: I have one stashed so will just stick it in the empty 1 slot you see there.
I may also be able to do an AspX with the trade in & just scrape in a full cargo hold of 80 limpets for a cool 12.7mill! :)
Oh yeah, I think I do have access to engineers, but not sure if I have to finish some missions or gain rep to use one. I have a Felicity ??? wanting to see me somewhere.
