Returning Player looking for links to updates

Hello all,
I am an old XBOX player, who made my fortune during the diamond mining days. It was announced that the expansion to get out of your ship was not coming to Xbox and so I quit playing.

Here years later, I have transferred my account to PC, along with a new viable gaming rig. I want to get back into things. Im looking for links/instructions but a lot of the stuff i find is years old, and I dont know if its still viable or not.

My questions are:

1) How do i find out what is the best way to complete surface missions. (Including what is the best gear and or weapons to take). My youtube searches are not very effective.
2) Besides missing the ENTIRE alien invasion cycle, and Carriers, what has really changed in the game.
3) Where do I find out about the new ships?
3.5 TO be honest its been years since i outfit my Anaconda and I need a refresher on ship creation. A good link would be super helpful.
4) Are there any new money making schemes? Does diamond mining still work?
5) I have an old Thrustmaster joystick. It feels more immersive than keyboard and mouse. But its a bit hard to control. Anyone have a good HOTAS/Stick setup you could share?

Thank you all for all the help in advance.

Dig.

1) Cmdr Buur has done some good settlement gameplay guides. Search on YouTube for 'Buur settlement' should find a bunch but here's one:
Source: https://youtu.be/h1brANzgLT4

2) engineering got easier with things like high grade emissions having LOADS of materials now; PowerPlay got a complete (and highly acclaimed) revamp; we got 4 excellent new ships; supercruise overcharged fsd's provide a game changing supercruise boost … and probably loads of stuff I’ve forgotten

3) there's probably good reviews of the new ships out there but I haven’t got links to hand I’m afraid

4) not sure what the money making meta is now the Thargoid war is over, possibly still mining? I’m talking nonsense, it's exobiology, of course it’s exobiology, get 1 or 2 kly out in a random direction (for the massive first discovered bonus on plants) and maybe install Elite Observatory with the BioInsights plugin. Generally ignore planets with only 1 biological (unless it looks like it’s going to be Stratum Tectonicus) 'cos it's probably hard to find bacteria and a massive time sink.

5) I could share my Thrustmaster Hotas setup but I think you’d find it pretty esoteric … I know it’s a pain but if you setup your own bindings they’ll probably suit you better and you’ll remember them easier

You guys are the best. I really need to buy a small ship and just go through the tutorials again and get back to basics. Its crazy how long I have been gone.
You should have a lot of fun catching up, if you are planning on being naughty with EDO settlements, a small & sturdy ship will certainly be your best friend... (as might the Scorpion SRV)

What does "Being Naughty with EDO settlements" mean? and any ship you suggest?
Some of the EDO engineering (suit & weapon) materials & data are quite elusive, going down to a settlement and murdering everyone in sight makes it a lot easier to ransack the storage units and hack data terminals.

Common advice is to do this at Anarchy controlled settlements to avoid bounties and notoriety, but it is much more fun to eliminate lawful, large, settlements (Industrial / extraction and Agriculture settlements can be very good, as can some of the large tourist resorts) and not be bothered by paltry bounties and notoriety that wears off after a few hours... (and there are many magnitudes more lawful than anarchy settlements!)

I like to fly the Vulture or Viper IV, both can be made 'tanky' and still make a rapid escape when required - Dumbfires on the Viper can help in clearing up the guards before going on a killing spree too!

Welcome back. Always assume any guide on the forums or on the net is possibly outdated if it is older than the latest game update or at least not edited since then.

Sorry I don’t bother with missions much.
2) Besides missing the ENTIRE alien invasion cycle, and Carriers, what has really changed in the game.
Engineering, materials drops, several generations of new SCO FSDs, PowerPlay, early acces to new generation ships.
3) Where do I find out about the new ships?

No idea exobiology still pays well.
Does diamond mining still work?
No I believe Platinum is OK, maybe Tritium.
5) I have an old Thrustmaster joystick. It feels more immersive than keyboard and mouse. But it’s a bit hard to control. Anyone have a good HOTAS/Stick setup you could share?
How much money do you have, there are lots of good HOTAS out there but many are pricey.

Thank you all for all the help in advance.

2) Besides missing the ENTIRE alien invasion cycle, and Carriers, what has really changed in the game.
  • On-foot content, including first-person-shooter missions, new landable thin-atmosphered planets, and exobiology.
  • SCO FSDs, which have completely revolutionized supercruise travel.
  • Engineering has been tuned to remove all randomness from them, making it completely deterministic. Also, engineering materials are now significantly more abundant.
  • New ships that are extremely good at their respective roles (combat, cargo transport, exploration and multipurpose).
  • Powerplay 2, which has completely revamped the entire powerplay minigame with quite a lot of new content.

3) Where do I find out about the new ships?
The Python Mk II and the Type-8 you can just buy with credits at any sufficiently stocked space port (use Inara to find them if you don't have access to Jameson Memorial).

The Mandalay is bound to become available for credits in a month or two at most. This is a beast of an exploration ship.

4) Are there any new money making schemes? Does diamond mining still work?
Mining doesn't really pay much anymore and it isn't the primary moneymaking activity (except perhaps for some of the most hardcore players).

Xeno combat used to be extremely lucrative, but now that fountain has gone dry for the most part. Trading can be very lucrative, but you need to know what to transport where (the pilots trading network can help you there). By far the most lucrative activity is exobiology, but it requires quite a commitment (you can't just do five minutes of exobiology and expect to get any significant gains. You really need to get out there into the black. But the payouts are fantastic.)

Also, i ended my first career with a mining anaconda. Its very big and unwieldy. Id like a new ship for settlement raiding. a decent medium size ship for fighting. Any suggestions for a ship and/or build? (I have plenty of money)

Fighting ships, FdL, Mamba, Krait Mk2, Python Mk2 which you choose depends a little on what you want to fight, how meta you can put up with and most importantly what you find nicest to fly.
I don’t settlement raid but something smaller and tough with a lot of dumbfire missiles maybe one of the Vipers.

Just reinstalling after more than 4 years away, and this thread? Excellent work, thanks! Just the same kind of questions as were in my head.

I haven't got Odyssey yet, though. Essential? Cheers
