Newcomer / Intro Returning Player; now even more casual

Started in 2016 I think, Stopped at the time they changed Exploration and introduced the Krait Mk II. Haven't purchased Odyssey yet as i'm learning how to fly again. Still plan on doing more exploration but space legs is going to be interesting. Back before I signed off, I remember I found a big neutron field way out in the black somewhere left of Colonia but between that and the bubble. Felt like I spent a week just tagging all of them. Good times.
The only questions I have are:
Is jumponium still a thing? If so, i'll have to figure out how to make it again.
Any new must-have engineering stuff I need to know about? Ship currently has a 64-67LY jump range so it's doubtful I need much more even today. Worth an ask either way.
Thanks! o7

Fleet carriers have a jump range of 500ly. So they've usurped the whole jump range thing.
Jumponium is still used but again not essential as it was back then. You can still extend jump range using white dwarfs or neutron stars. The latter x4 hehe.
On foot engineering is a huge time sink. But you can find suits and weapons at any orbiting or planetary port (odyssey only) that are already buffed.
Ship engineering is also a huge timesink but worth it as it makes a huge difference overall to a given ships capabilites.
Thargoids are on the march. Apparently! Soon update 14 will drop with a incoming narrative and what could be the start of a huge attack on the bubble.
Odyssey has come alongway since launch. Its still unoptimised. So having a good gpu really helps.
I wish you well in your return cmdr.

There are some double engineered modules around now, most where rewards fo being in a Community Goal but some can be bought from the Human Technology Traders for materials and or credits one of the purchasable ones is an FSD with somewhat better range also available is a Detailed Surface Scanner with much more coverage.
Some of these can have engineering tweaks made but changing anything other than the Experimental Effect is likely to turn them into the ordinary module.

If your last visit here was when the Krait II was introduced then you'll be glad to know only 2 new ship hulls have entered service since then!

It took a bit to digest that.
Isn't that like putting an escalator on Mount Everest? I guess I need to look around the exploration forum but is just going out on your own still done or does everyone get to go to Sag A, Colonia or Beagle Point now? I mean, I know times change and a lot of major exploration objectives have been completed but it seems with so much unexplored there would still be hordes of pioneer types out there quietly mapping away.

Fleet Carriers at 5 billion credits plus to buy and kit out and with an upkeep of 5-10 million a week are still a stretch for some to acquire. They also take 15 minutes for a single jump most of which is warming up the Tritium powered drive, the last 5 minutes the carrier is locked down. Don’t think of them as a ship they are more like a mobile station.

Most are going out on their own still and if not using their own carrier calling in on ones that have been placed around the galaxy by other commanders as a service.

I have been playing for six years and still not got more than 5,100Ly from the bubble though I expect that to change shortly.

The Guardian FSD boosters can add up to 10LY to your range, so useful if you need to go a long way or explore sparse areas at the outer edges.

Krait Phantom is worth a look as a more expensive upgrade to the Asp Explorer as an exploration ship. A bit better jump range, stronger shields, more space, sleek design but cockpit view cannot match the Asp X.
Engineered FSD V1 from human tech brokers is the best FSD in the game. Add mass manager experimental effect. Available in size class 5 only.

So you' re the guy who mapped the neutron Hi-way, you'll need AFMU's also, you take a small amount of damage while charging you're FSD in a neutron cone. I still explore "old school" style with my Anaconda, I'm currently 50,000+ Ly from the bubble. The outer edges of the Milkyway are heavily explored, but there's still plenty of undiscovered systems inside the outer arm.

Oh no, I did not say that. I found a pretty big neutron star field some distance from Colonia. It was just a field, not the highway. I never took the risk out there.

For all of the other tips I appreciate them, I've briefly looked at the Krait Phantom so far. For what it's worth, I have all the engineered stuff save for the double secret engineered thing. Everything suggested so far was the norm back before I left. Guardian booster, engineered FSD with MM effect, etc. Like I said current jump range is 63-67LY. I carry a scarab to break the monotony and cargo room in case I find something interesting on a planet or need jumponium materials. I have a soft spot finding escape pods 40,000LY from anywhere.

I think it's mentioned on EDSM but certainly in other discussions, that there is a "broken torus" of four large neutron fields (lots of black holes too!) surrounding the centre of the galaxy, about 1000LY under the plane, and Colonia is near the edge of one of those. Lots to discover (and use for fast travel).

Yeah the neutrons are - 1000ly on the plane...like their heavier hehe..dropping.
I when I'm out in the black, use em all the time to navigate. Once I've found an unexplored region I spam it scanning ringed planets too for mining deep core which is a relief in the black. My carrier isn't too far either hehe..so using a ship that's capable of multitasking is essential for me. Exobiology requires a buggy. And a good g3 upwards artemis suit with jump assist, night vision, extra battery.
Mining, and detailed scanning capability. So cargo n limpets required lol.
Just saves time swapping from 1 ship to another.
I too use the conda. She's ultra cool built so hard to detect. 7% heat shieldless hehe.

I don't have a carrier yet, I relied and still do on the DSSA network even though it costs 25% of my payout and not many of them have vista either. I wish I had brought a corrosion resistant cargo rack for the Thargoid senser fragments I keep coming across, I have a small rack for hull repair limpets and I carry two SRV's incase I lose one.

You don't need a rack for the fragments - just the sensors. The fragments are held in your materials list (TARDIS pockets).

I think it costs 25% to cash in data at Universal Cartographics on your own carrier too, when you own one - part of the franchise arrangement.

That's good news, we were talking about this in the other thread and I thought someone wrote that their ship was destroyed or could be destroyed from them (can't remember exactly). I've found four of them and saw a fifth on my LH navigation panel and didn't pick them up because of what I read.

Yes half of that goes to the carrier though, the other 12.5% goes to Universal Cartographics.

The Engineered FSD V1 in an ASP Explorer will add around another 5ly to the jump range.
If you use Coriolis and set grade 5 increased range with mass manager and then edit the optimal mass figure on the FSD configuration to 1856.4 you'll get the exact range for your ship.
