Returning Player - why did I get attacked?

Hello Commanders

Coming back after a year away and trying to get into Odyssey. Problem is, trying to do anything on foot in a settlement generally results in a very quick death and going to the prison ship (and head held in hands, again, frustrated at everything I just lost as well as time). I think I have sussed out being scanned by guards (stand still, holster anything, drop cloned profiles, pray I haven’t got a bounty).

I’m starting to understand the stealth approach. And I know I need to get to the settlement alarm first (yet to succeed). But earlier I interacted with the base power panel and all hell let loose. I dropped the cloned profile before a guard scanned me. He let me go and I walked out of the power building. I then went, freely and feeling good as first time I had got away with anything, over to an external terminal. Accessed it to mark the Command building as I wanted to suss out how to switch alarms off. But then got attacked by a sentry skimmer. And then death swiftly followed. I had just passed a scan so don’t understand why the skimmer attacked.

What did I do wrong to get attached by a skimmer?

Anything I can do to make life a little more easier for me in settlements? I’m hoping to get a couple of friends into Odyssey but I’m not sure they’ll stick at it. It does seems the C&P approach is a little brutal.

thanks All
Jon

Honestly ive never been attacked by a skimmer in a settlement, disabling the alarm is the way to go, it wont stop you being attacked but will stop things getting much worse.
Best thing i can suggest is to practice on a settlement in an Anarchy system as this should not result in Porridge.
Take your time when reckying the base, don't rush until you're sure no one can see you cloning the security pass or know exactly where the alarm is, go in guns blazing straight to it.
After a while you will find that a lot of the settlements have similar layouts with just a few alarms moved to different places.

Thanks for the tips Darrack and Jack Winter. I’ll give them a go and will keep at it. Would still be useful to understand about the skimmer attacking me, maybe the video covers it.

What did I do wrong to get attached by a skimmer?

Because you turned off the power without disabling the alarms first
IF you turn down the power or do any aggressive action against the settlement this will everntually trigger the alarms (imediately or initiated by a guard comms)
And when alarms are triggered the Sentries (and the Ships flying above the settlement providing Combat Air Patrol - if any) will get aggressive towards you.

Edit:
tl: dr you can do anything nasty in a settlement and the sentries won't care... as long the alarms are not triggered.

when i was playing my go to method was to bring an e-breach and a weapon that has noise suppressor and audio masking (tormentor is best). That way you can shoot some people without the sound alerting others. You can also shoot a couple people before getting noteriety.

So you go to the first computer terminal out in the open you can find, make sure a guard doesnt see or scan you. apply ebreach and identify where the control panel is. go straight there, cut your way through doors if you need to (you can do this if no guards are watching you). being inside a building that has access control isnt a crime itself and NPCs will ignore you unlesse they actually catch you cutting. if any guards do see you, just kill them quickly with your silenced tormentor. Once at the panel area, there should be one or two lvl 3 NPCs nearby in its restricted area (NPCs will alert if they see you in a restricted area). rush in quickly kill them, scan their corpse to steal their profile and then turn off the alarms. as soon as alarms are off, you can pretty much do what you like as being caught wont alert the whole settlement. Just bear in mind that once you kill more than a few NPCs, you will get noteriety so try and keep it below that.

Lastly i have been attacked by skimmers before, but only after setting off the alarm.

Strange, I've never been attacked by a skimmer before either, even when the alarms are triggered.
O? I've been attacked by them before, not sure why, but I have.

OP, try doing some power restore mission to learn the base layouts and alarm location. Watch out for scavengers but most of these are easy. To find them you can look for system in a negative state.

If I can't figure it out myself, I don't deserve to be successful...
Experience is a master teacher, even when it’s not our own.
It is nice to have a guide if one is not confident (or doesn't have the time or inclination to learn) in their own abilities.

But, all of the players I engage with have learned how to do / not do activities in the game themselves, even with 'skill sharing' it has only been general principles rather than detailed instructions.

There is greater satisfaction in finding one's way unassisted against having a hand-hold, although both are valid methods, naturally.

Sometimes I wonder how future humans will discover new science. Will there be a generation that has no idea how to experiment, dissect results, analyze info and formulate new ideas. How will anyone learn anything new without asking someone that already knows? Then I realized, this is why AI exists! In the future a scientist will be someone that types prompts into a AI chatbox! As long as they can stumble into the right prompt and the dataset exists for the AI to make the links we'll be OK! 😄

IRL, sure, but this is a game and the challenge, while severely frustrating at times, at least for me anyway, is the thing that keeps me coming back.

naw you probably did someting you dont get randomly atacekd by skinners etc. and yes its a bit brutol the settlement guards. but think this as real life. what would people think if i had a gun on me and i started waving that gun around ?? what would happen to me if i did this in real life .?? would the result be the same with what happen in a game etc?? what if i stole someting from a grocery store what would happen if i went trough the scanners etc ... once you start thinking what happens to you in the game and what would happen if you did it in real life in the contexte of on foot odessey the game becomes super easy to understand .

First rule of anything in science - check what was done before and if anyone done something similar in the past. You'd probably be surprised to see how much progress is in fact as a result of incremental gains in understanding using collaborations and leaning on past data, rather than a sudden leap forward by someone in a genius moment.

I agree with you Keloot. And that is why I’m trying to understand what I may have done to be attacked after just clearing a scan from a guard. So I can learn from it as others on here have suggested.
I’m not giving up, frustrated or not.

If you interacted with the power terminal, you were in a restricted area. Security level doesn't matter for restricted areas. Once you're seen in a restricted area, you get a second or two to leave. If you fail to leave fast enough, you get your first trespass warning. The second time, they open fire.

Also: It seems that it takes a little time for people inside a building to sound the alarm. The guard may have scanned you before someone in the building alerted them.

The radar screen icon colors are very helpful. White or Green = no problem, Yellow = they're alerted - get out of their sight, Red = They'll open fire on sight - and they are looking for you.
