PvP Returning to the game part 2: PvP

I'll be honest: I was never the best at PvP in this game (which is a little frustrating, since in real life I've flown planes and I'm a pretty good shot - but of course the combat here is a different kettle of fish). Partly I put it down to my fairly low-end set-up (technically my graphics card doesn't meet the minimum specs, so my frame rates aren't great), and partly to my lack of experience flying FA Off (which I'm now rectifying, though it'll be some time yet before I can fight effectively with FA Off and fixed weapons). Also, I've been away from the game for almost a year, so I was bound to be a bit rusty anyway.

All that said... Is it me, or is PvP basically a hopeless proposition unless you're in a ship outfitted/engineered solely for that purpose?

Tonight I got interdicted three times around Shinrarta (not a huge surprise, given its popularity, and that it's Sunday night). The first time I tried to fight the interdiction, thinking maybe it had been tweaked while I was away. Nope: still impossible to win, apparently! And I fought it for too long, with the usual consequences. Didn't fancy a fight, so I boosted away, with FA Off and chaff - and annoyingly, I almost made it. But no.

The second and third times, knowing I couldn't fight it, I submitted immediately. The second time, I was able to escape almost instantly (again, I didn't fancy my chances with the build I had), yet I only just hung on to my last sliver of shielding. The third time I was flying in a Krait Mk II without shields (don't ask), and I was dead within, I'd say, five seconds max. OK, no shields, but... five seconds?

To clarify, this isn't intended to be a whine: I fly in open, which makes me fair game, and PvP is easily avoided even in open. Plus, money is so easy to come by now that dying (though it may hurt the old pride) is just a minor inconvenience. And once I've done all the Guardians stuff I may be cruising around looking for some PvP action. I'm just curious to know whether others find these kinds of encounters as incredibly difficult as I do.

Undoubtedly I need more practice, though it's possible I just suck... Meh. There are worse things to suck at :)

Yes.

Engineers pretty much delivered an enormous dollop of power creep and you need to be in it to be competitive ... unless you are just targetting low level raders/exploerers and newbies.

Basically it's engineer or die.
That said the new engineering is way easier and many people will help you get your build sorted.
That's not a big deal anymore.

You might(likely) still die but at least then you'll know it's not your ship!
:D

(I guess that makes it engineer and die...)

There was similiar thread not long ago, where explorer asked for advice how to prepare for attacks of overengineered killer machines on his explorer build spacecraft, and although he was complemented on not whining, but wanting to "git gut", sadly general consesus seemed to be that without combat oriented engineering, there's not much chance of survival against that kind of enemy.

Thanks, CMDRs! That's reassuring… and not, if you see what I mean :)

What are the current "leet builds"? (Maybe there's a recent discussion someone can point me towards, or an external site.) I had a play with some (non-engineered) plasma accelerators the other day, and they seemed to deal a lot of damage – though I don't think that's what I was hit with last night. Not that I had much time to make an assessment!

I was planning to do the Guardians stuff just for the experience, not for the tech/weapons themselves, as it's my understanding that they're geared towards fighting Thargoids rather than humans. But maybe I'm wrong on that and everyone is flying around with Guardians kit already...

That seems backwards to be honest.

What ships do you want to fly?
Do you intend to actually get into PVP, or just survive attacks in open?
They are two different things entirely.

Use this to start: https://coriolis.edcd.io/

The FSD and shield boosters have been very well received, and I enjoyed the novelty of the unlocking process.
But I think you're getting ahead of yourself a little.
Just unlocking those two is pretty quick and painless that said.

Engineer or die.
Or play CQC and have a much more level playing field with no rebuy. heh, heh

If you do engineer for PVP in Open, you will have to unlock Professor Palin for the G5 dirty drives.

If you want to be efficient, look up all the requirements for the specific engineers you want and stockpile. This means that exploration data, combat vouchers, etc. should be hoarded and NOT turned into stations, but to specific engineers.

Begin hoarding all mats: raw, encoded and manufactured. Pounce on any High Grade Emission Sources.

Have a ton of patience. It took me almost a year to get my five favorite ships all grade 5 engineered.

For now, the latter. Currently (mainly) flying a Krait II and an Asp. Earlier in the Krait I survived something like five interdictions in a row (in Shinrarta again). Was pumped up for the first; rolling my eyes by the last one.

Just now been blown up again in the Asp. Stupidly had another crack at beating the interdiction game, and I have to wonder, what's the point in even having it if it's impossible to beat? And I'm not sure what more I could have done to withstand/evade whatever-the-hell explosive stuff was being fired at me.

Tried to get behind him and engaged silent running? Maybe. I'm not sure.

For the mo I'm inclined to just get the hell away from Shinrarta. Can you blame me?

I don't blame these CMDRs either, btw. If I were looking for PvP that's exactly where I'd be. It's just not the game I'm kitted out for/interested in playing right now. And I'm not sure how interesting it can be to take on an opponent who's been dragged into a gunfight armed with a metaphorical penknife.

Noted - thanks.

I've only dabbled with the Engineers thus far (FSD range upgrades), but yeah, I'll clearly need to go at it more thoroughly. Cheers.

(That color makes it almost impossible to read, fyi.)

To be frank, it sounds like your technique needs lots of work.
You can't outrun a faster ship and the Asp is especially weak.
Fighting and losing the interdiction is the worst thing you can do.

Study both of these well, and follow the directions.
The second one is newer and reflects some engineering, and has two builds.
(Mild profanity in both.)

Cool, I'd suggest unlocking these first:
The Dweller (distributor)
Lei Chung (shields)
Didi Vatermann (shield boosters)
Selene Jean (hull/armor)
Professor Palin (thrusters)

That will get your defense sorted
Despite what a lot of people will try to tell you it's slanted in the defender's advantage.

Thanks Bob - I'll watch those tomorrow.

Re the interdictions, yeah, I know. That last time I thought I'd surrendered in time, but apparently not. I'm just gonna submit to them immediately from now on; unless I'm missing something, they're unwinnable.

Against players with engineered interdictors it is very difficult to beat.

Engineered interdictors? Well, that explains that!

Watched both vids and found them v enlightening, though I was somewhat dismayed by the long and bewildering list of engineering tweaks recommended for the Asp. I guess that's what the game is now (I don't entirely blame FDev for this; I imagine players were clamouring for customisation options), so I'll have to dive into this stuff, at least for a while.

My takeaways (besides the obvious: I need to get engineerin') are that I should monitor the scanner more and drop out of SC when a situation looks to be brewing, and also have a high-wake target ready to go when other players are around. I still may be screwed if my attacker's using some high-powered fixed weapon, and/or just determined to ruin my day 10-15 minutes or so.

I've also just remembered about integrity repairs (hey, it's been a while), so my hulls may have been even more eggshell-y than usual. So that's another easy fix.

Once I'm done with engineering/the Guardians malarkey – and playing around with the new exploration stuff in Chapter Four, when it arrives – I'll def be up for some sparring so I can "git gud" (or as "gud" as is possible with my setup). Not sure how long that other stuff will take me, though.

Engineering is required if you wish to be competitive.

That said, you can have an awesome ship, but if you don't know how to fly it, it isn't going to do you much good.

The best way to git gud at PvP is to get out there and fight-- nothing is better than hands on. Make friends, get your name out there. Keep salt to a minimum. Plenty of people out there are willing to offer advice, too. You just gotta ask.

If you're on Xbox, I get people together each week to fight each other. Link to the discord is in my sig if you wanna hang out. If you're on another platform, I suggest getting together with friends and fighting them.

Watch that video Bob linked. The Git Gud Guide is Elite gospel as far as I'm concerned.
