Newcomer / Intro Returning to the game

Well, well, well, here I am again after a long time being away from the game.

I started playing ED way back in the beta phase in October 2014 and just kinda stopped in December 2020 so I have a LOT of catching up to do. It's nice to see the community still here and thriving and so I would like to ask a favour.

Is there a good catch-up document I can read that will bring me up to speed relatively quickly with the last 4 years of features? I'm assuming I am going to have to re-bind all my keys (not looking forward to that) and spend some time getting the feel back for flying...guess I'll break out a skinny Viper till I get my space legs back lol.

There have been a lot of improvements - so many, in fact that it's difficult to condense into one post with any real detail. I took a bit of a break and never really followed the Thargoid war, so some of my dates might be off somewhat.

June 2020:
  • Fleet carriers are released. People are angry.
May 2021:
  • Odyssey releases. Space legs - on foot pew pew, scavenging and exploration. People are angry.
May 2021 - 2023:
  • Lots of patches to fix Odyssey, particularly its performance issues. People are still angry.
  • Some dude named Salvation really gets the Thargoids ticked off. They send eight massive capital ships (Titans) and invade the Bubble. People are angry.
Early 2024:
  • After disappointing financial returns on a series of titles, FD turns its attention to Elite again. People are angry.
  • How to kill Titans is established. They start going boom.
April 2024:
  • Python Mk. II announced. Available in early access for Arx. People are angry.
May 2024:
  • Python Mk. II released into early access. Lakon Type 8 announced. People are angry.
July/August 2024:
  • Type 8 goes into Early access.
  • Zorgon Peterson Mandalay announced.
  • Python Mk. II in general release.
  • People are angry.
October 2024:
  • Type 8 goes into general release.
  • Mandalay goes into early access. People are angry.
November 2024:
  • Cobra Mk. V announced. People are angry.
  • Final Titan, Cocijo, ups sticks and heads for Sol.
  • People are angry.
December 2024:
  • Cobra Mk. V goes into early access. It's a beast. Strangely, no one is angry.
  • Titan Cocijo goes pop. FD reward CMDRs who participated with seriously good pre-engineered FSDs. CMDRs who didn't participate can still buy them from human tech brokers with materials scavenged from dead titans. No one is angry.
  • FD announce system colonisation as an upcoming feature. It is slated for a beta release in early 2025. Results of the beta will be persistent.
  • CMDR Rardain announces his return. People are angry again. :)

Do the training scenarios again from the main or cockpit menus. This will get you back into things and it is a good way to sort out your bindings.

As has been said above there have been many changes to all sorts of things.

Hahaha, people are angry - yeah that's how its always been since the beta release...guess that will never change (but not as angry as the SC people 🤣).

I spent a bit of time moving around and tweaking buttons this evening - damn there's a lot more of buttons now 😂

Cheers people.

X56 HOTAS, Cougar MFD, keyboard, mouse and game controller for the SRV. Basically the same setup I had back at the end of 2020, just more covered in dust.

Supercruise overcharge (SCO) is also new, and a bit of a game changer for many of us.
I knew I'd forgotten something!

SCO is pure dead brilliant. 100kls to the station? Less than a minute now.

SCO is probably the single biggest quality of life change in the game in the decade since release. I was never that bothered by long supercruise times, but I wouldn't go back to standard drives for any reason, which is fortunate because there's really no reason not to just fit SCO drives and forget Sirius drives ever existed.

Yes, now obviously I've seen all the Thargoid war chatter and it's aftermath is the advent of these new drives.

As ever, it looks like grind is the order of the Elite day and I'm going to need a bunch of materials and commodities to take to Tech-broker to get access to the SCO drives.

The main Thargoid component is toxic, correct? And to combat this I believe I need anti-corrosive racking? What size? As I understand it I have to Tech these too 😂

My next question around obtaining the required materials is, do they all need to be stored in racking aboard your ship or can you grab pieces and deposit them somewhere for safe storage or with a Tech-broker? If not I guess I'd need a fair sized ship with plenty of storage capacity.

Can you remind me if you can store racking that contains cargo?

Cheers

Materials get stored on the bags-of-holding in your space suit, tey don't require cargo space. So the usual advice is to collect the mats at your leisure, then go and pick up the cargo as the last step befoe handing everything in to whoever wants to have it. And yes, you need to hand in everything in one go.

You can, to some extent, store stuff in your (if you have one) or a trustworthy (good luck) Fleet Carrier.

And no, you can't store filled cargo racks - or store cargo in your inactive ships.

SCO drives are available in outfitting. No brokers.

The FSDs I mentioned are community goal rewards. They have about 5% more jump range than standard SCO drives.

You can unlock these drives at your leisure - the wrecked Titans aren't going to evaporate, I think. But yes, I believe you'll need a corrosion-resistant cargo rack when you go scooping. You'll also need a caustic sink to keep the Thargoid goop off your hull and probably some hull reinforcement packages to boost your hull health, just in case.

The really good thing about SCO drives is that while they may reduce cruise times you will be much more involved in flying your ship so the interaction with the game increases. A downside is that you won’t be able to do as much non game stuff.

The bought from tech broker variant adds some jump range, but the off the shelf units from outfitting are perfectly good.

You can get 1 and 2 tonne capacity corrosion resistant cargo racks from Professor Palin who is now in Arque(sp?) there is at least one larger size available elsewhere from a Tech Broker.

Your bags of holding for ship engineering mats are for each individual material and hold 300 down to 100 depending on the grade of the mat, on foot stuff is one bag for everything but I don’t use it so have forgotten how little it holds.
