Returning user from years ago how do I put on new PC etc

Hi all, I played Elite Dangerous quite a bit just after it first came out, then stopped playing and haven't played it for years. (at least six years I think.)

I would like to play it again now. I last played on my old Windows 7 PC and now wish to play on my Windows 11 PC, so how do I go about this and if
I install it on there, will my old saved position still be there? (I think I was in a space station somewhere and also had several ships dotted about in various locations.)

I'm guessing that I just have to install the game from the Frontier store site, login and go from there, but when I checked the site just now it seems I have to buy it again
for £19.99. I tried to login on the Frontier site, using the same login as for this forum, but it wasn't recognised.

I do realise that several updates have been done since I last played (landing on planets, Thargoids etc) and at least some of those have to be paid for though.

Any suggestions please? Thanks!

Log in to the Frontier Store https://www.frontierstore.net using your Frontier account details then go to "My Downloadable Products" and download the launcher installer - run that, log in to the launcher using the same credentials as the store, then install the game.

The store account may use a different e-mail / password than the forums - it's a different account.

You need to log onto the Frontier site with your originals credentials (which may be different to your forum details)

Irrc, all original players got a copy of the Horizons version of the game so this is the one you will need to redeem.

Once you log in, just download the launcher and you'll be gtg.

Your CMDR ought to be in the same place with all your exists assets but who knows? Keep us updated!

Ok thanks guys, I'll give that a try. I'm hoping I can still find my account details on my old PC, but they should be there. Cheers!

As mentioned by others, if you only had the base game then you will have received access to Horizons when it was folded down into the base game and withdrawn from sale as a DLC. Both the base game and Horizons appear as separate options on the launcher - but install as one.

If you bought a lifetime expansion pass you will have access to Odyssey on the launcher - this is a completely separate installation from the base game / Horizons.

Ok, I have managed to install it on my Windows 11 PC. I downloaded Horizons, then loaded the game. My original CMDR appeared with all credits intact ( presumably all my ships elsewhere as well, but haven't checked that yet - first of all I need to relearn the game as I've forgotten much of it!.)

Also before I start playing I want to install my new HOTAS joystick. My last saved position though seems to be out in space and not in a space station as I thought.

I would like to be able to land on and explore planets, but do I need Odyssey for that?

Horizons has landable planets that you can drive on, using the SRV.

Odyssey has landable planets with tenuous atmospheres that you can drive and/or walk on.

Just a tip, but you'll have to figure out the bindings for your HOTAS, so I recommend doing that while running a simple training mission (you can get to those from the main menu). That way you're not risking anything while you faff about.

You can get out onto planets in your SRV without Odyssey, but you need Odyssey to disembark and go on foot.

Ok, I'll give Horizons a try first, then maybe go for Odyssey. Looks like I can get a lifetime expansion thingy. I'm finding all the download options somewhat confusing but whatever...

Thanks for all your help.

Ok I'll set the bindings for the joystick

With odyssey, you can go out into the black.
Explore the galaxy
Mining asteroids
Exbiology (on foot) on planetary bodies
Collecting raw materials as well.
It's an amazing combination of activities.
Alternatively you can plot up in the bubble. On foot combat zones. Hehe.
Collecting materials to upgrade personal weapons and suits.
So much to unlock.
Ship engineering which you can do in horizons too.
But exploring a planetary surface both in a buggy, and on foot. Is fab... you'll love it.
Welcome back.

SOME Commanders will love it , I'm an original ELITE player ( C64 ) and even though I purchased Odyssey ( just in case they discontinued Horizons ) I don't want to play CoD in Space .

I played the original Elite on the C64 as well (although in fact its first appearance was on the BBC Micro.) Trying to dock manually with those old Rubic Cube space stations was just that - trying!
Anyway, re an update on where I am now. I'm getting the hang of it again after years of not playing and been practising landing on planets as well. I've just now upgraded to Odyssey so we'll see how that goes!

I know it started on the BBC Model B and after playing ELITE on the C64 I also played it on the Acorn Electron ( Baby BBC ) Spectrum / Amstrad CPC 464 / Toshiba HX10 MSX and then Commodore Amiga , I then played Frontier ELITE II on the Amiga 1200

I only played the original Elite on the C64, but did play Frontier Elite II once that came out. I forget which computer I played it on now though - I didn't have an Amiga at the time but did have an Atari ST, so I think it must have been on that.
