Revive CQC - It's up to us players!

Greetings Commanders,

I just realized that CQC being mostly dead is just a self-fulfilling prophecy.. "Players don't participate in CQC because the queue times are long, making the queue times longer by them not playing either."

We should, as a community, start to make time for some CQC here & there and I feel like it will naturally make a comeback, without FDev intervention. Idk about you, but every time I HAVE played CQC I had a blast, weaving in and out of buildings and getting to focus JUST no PvP without worrying about 20 million ship rebuys. Who's with me?! Let's bring CQC back like Justin Timberlake! :p

If you're on PC, we have a pretty active player community already - https://discord.me/elitedangerouscqc/ - and you should be able to find a game pretty consistently between about 6pm and 2am UTC, and sometimes other times as well. (There's a DM on right now)
If you're on XBox or PS4 we also have channels for those platforms, which are less generally active but do organise matches from time to time.
Either way, come and join us - since Cmdr Sowelu founded it about a year ago, we've got increasingly reliable matches.

It helps with the problem that there's no in-game way to tell between "no-one is playing", "3 people are queueing and we just need to wait for a fourth" and "an exact multiple of 8 are playing and I just need to wait for one of them to leave" ...

I think time of day definitely has a lot to do with it, late evening UK time I have
no issues finding a match. I find it great for raw fa-off dogfighting, much more fun than ingame pvp

+1

Maybe pick a couple peak-time slots (obviously varies world-wide, but) a Saturday eve or Sunday afternoon maybe, and everyone who's up for it can log on then, if life permits. Might whittle down waiting times a bit, at least for those in this thread with some interest.

Great way to learn PVP, but I'm busy with the main game and only have so much time.

It's a shame, but I honestly think that if it was integrated into the main game, not just technically but with some gamesmanship and buildup from frontier it could have been a noteworthy feature.
- Major faction tournaments that qualify for galaxy wide tournaments and then a champions league for the best of the best.
- Actual one off "digital" in game prizes that you can't get on the store, enhanced modules and weapons, having your voice in game in certain stations, having your name or picture in station advertisements, or even a visit to frontier for the day.
- The CQC locations could have been special eye candy material making visits special.
- If ranked perhaps that resulted in an increase payout on combat missions for a preset duration, or what about eventually becoming a "trophy fighter" for faction wars or disputes between player groups where single players could settle an argument openly one on one and it was streamed by Frontier to settle disputes in a fair fight. The stream would be quite short in some situations :). It would inject some honour into the game which might be interesting.

Anyway lots of thoughts on this. In retrospect, I think that Frontier's decision to concentrate on the main game (in my humble opinion) and improve core mechanics is the right one. I'd forgotten about CQC until this thread.

I couldn't find a single match until I joined the cqc discord.. since then I can jump in everytime there is enough people to play.

I know in GMT-5 theres usually a good amount of people on during Tuesday afternoons! It's rare that I hop on but I usually get a lobby in a minute or two

I would like to see CQC incorporated more into the fabric of the ED universe. Scheduled tournaments advertised on GalNet, It would be cool if they were held at specific stations but that might be a logistics issue for some players who might be out in the void but still want to participate. Obviously when championships are happening matches will need to be scheduled to facilitate time zones the participants are in. Have matches recorded so they can be viewed by fans or possibly watched live. Have entry fees and prize money, and gambling, you can gamble on the matches.

Now all this would take a lot of organization and I don't think that should fall on DFev do a way for players to help out would be cool. A new profession, a CQC match promoter.

I'm in.

I'll talk to my co-host to see if we can start adding some cqc to the show

Great Idea

So we tried CQC for the first time last night (starting at around 1:22, after MC kept locking up) and we had a good time even though I'm really not very good at it lol.

Edit: I think Mace did so much better because he was using a HOTAS and I was using an XBO gamepad (which is not the easiest to vary speed with)

:-( I need to work with Mace on his new PC audio setup as sometimes I hear myself coming from his mic, ugh.

Maybe FDev should create a stand-alone CQC client and publish it free to play on Steam. Might work to attract people to E:D and at least improve the chance of having people to match up with.
