Reworking of how hulls are damaged/destroyed.

Noticed lately there have been ships I shoot that have 0% hull and still alive and got me thinking.

What if the hull was broken up into sections covering the ships vital modules ,each section would have 100% integrity and when it reaches zero it decompresses and exposes the module to damage.

So to kill a ship you would take the ships shield down which covers the entirety of the hull.
Then you have options of which hull section to take out which protects the modules etc.
So you target the section covering the module you want and destroy it.
Then you destroy the module and say its the fuel tanks which explode ships dead or you could hit the pp and disable the ship.

There would be many vulnerable points such as engines or canopy that only the shield protects.

I'd like to see the scenario where you blow out the section of hull covering the cargo bay then destroy the cargo bay so the cargo flies out.

Being able to do these things would make piracy much better as you would not have to kill the cmdr.

I've sometimes felt that actual ship destruction could be a lot less arbitrary. Just reducing some magical number to 0 wouldn't do it in any scifi situation; you'd have to actually break the ship up, destroy a critical module or kill the pilot directly; otherwise you'd more likely have an adrift and heavily scarred but otherwise intact wreck rather than a disintegrating explosion.

Sure would make the salvager's life interesting...I once ran into an adrift Anaconda. Shattered canopy, glowing trails of scorched parts all over, a few fragments missing but otherwise in one piece. Too bad there's no actual salvage gameplay...

I totally agree with this, ship destruction should be a rare thing, salvage and repair should be the norm. and instead of the reboot/repair that brings broken modules up to a "working" 1%, you would have to call for a tow, leave in escape pod to come back and salvage your ship etc, etc.

With the current ingame design of ships being "wanted", to claim this you have to bring the ship in, either by yourself, or have a salvage contract with a salvage company to tow it for you, at a fee of course.
