Rhino X55 help needed

My sons bought me a Rhino X55 Hotas for my 60th Birthday to replace the now failing T-Flight HOTAS I have been using.
Sad to say, I am having terrible problems with it to the extent that it is causing me a huge amout of grief.
It behaves unpredictably and seems to fire off commands I never requested and I am getting slaughtered out there.

Does anyone have an "Idiots Guide" to setup of this device with the HUD software or perhaps a "profile" file from a stable working system?

Starting with the Saitek X55 selected in ED's "Options" doesn't quite work as it stands.

Yes, I have searched the forums and seen the lovely Labelled artwork of people's set ups; but that doesn't program the actual device it just denotes what functions folks have allocated to buttons & switches and NOT how they programmed the MADCATZ HUD software or the resulting profile in the HUD software or in ED.

At the moment this lovely HOTAS is a paperweight on my desk.

Many thanks in advance for your considered replies.

I'm using the X55 throttle for some time now unfortunately the joystick broke. I've started with a fresh custom settings and removed any bindings in the first step. Afterwards I added all bindings for the trottle. I also checked that the Saitek app did not add any additional macros or bindings.

Good luck...

Is it plugged into a usb3?
That is known to cause issues sometimes.
Make sure it is in a usb2
My advise is to go back to some training missions and play about docking, combat etc to figure out where you want to bind functions to.

Congrats! Even if you are griefing at the moment, salvation and joy is on the other side :-D

What I did with mine is not touch the Madcatz software at all. It is running total default.

Then inside Elite, I went to the config section and selected the X55 profile first. And afterwards I reconfigured a lot of it to my liking based on the lovely tool that makes those images.

It will take some time to find the best setup for everything and remember them. But its totally worth it!!

Next year wish for an Oculus and you are all set in nerdgasm heaven

Hey,

The issue you have with commands being 'spontaneously' given, is called ghosting. It happens, apparently, when the X-55 is not supplied with enough power.

I myself (and others who posted about this same issue), solved this by either:

1. Plugging into a usb 3.0 port (gives more voltage)

2. Connecting to a powered USB hub.

The X-55 drivers used to have problems with usb 3.0 ports but that is no longer the case.

Good luck & fly safe,

Like another person said, I do not use the software I just configure the buttons to match what is in ED... have had no issues so far

My Rhino came in today, didn't install the madkatz software. ED has an X55 profile already set up in the game. Just make whatever changes you need to make to that. Been working super swell for me.

Hi there,

thats a common issue on the Rhino I never experienced.

First you should use a usb 3.0 ( if you have None you can buy a hub with power supply )
I started dimming the leds on the throttle ( turn them of if nothing helps ) to 50%
and never had any Problems regarding ghosting. Although my throttle is not
working perfectly regarding friction, will have to Exchange it.

From my Point of view it is a great stick for the Money, you get loads of Buttons and Switches
and it's working just fine. But if you cant get it working give it back and try another hotas.

Regarding bindings, mine was identified as X55 and pre binded quite perfectly,
just switched a few buttons.

Good luck, feel free to ask if you have anymore questions.

Ah, so that's why my throttle is trying to kill me by randomly booting me into the rear wall of the station?

USB2 external hub on order :)

Thanks!

@DantheMan

I had very similar issues with my X55. I found that the issue was that I had another pointer device (a horrible cheap gamepad in my case) that was still plugged in. A non issue with Beta, but caused loads of issues with the full release. Obviously something changed.

Once I unplugged the offending (or maybe that should be offensive) gamepad, everything worked just as it should. My advise would be to unplug anything you don't strictly need, just to be on the safe side.

Hmmmm... I'll be ordering one of these next week. Should I

(a) "Make sure it is in a USB 2.0" or
(b) "Make sure it is in a USB 3.0" port?

Did one of you chaps make a typo?

I use the Rosewill 2-Port USB 3.0 PCI Express Card Model RC-505 with no issues. Before I got it my X55 would go crazy with random button ghosting.

I'm neither of those chaps but I'm plugged directly in to my computer using USB 3 ports and have never seen the ghosting problem. I would suggest that a powered USB 3 hub would be your best bet if you don't have USB 3 ports available on your computer.

And once you're up and running with it you can use the link in my signature to print out a reference sheet; they do have a lot of buttons...

I'm guessing you don't use the software ? Just drivers ?
I'm just a lowly x52 user :D but with that it wouldn't accept any profile from the software using USB3 but did with USB2.
So using USB3 there seemed to be some conflicts between non specified profile from the software and the ED X52 bindings.
Solved by moving to USB2.
Might be different for X55 of course.

I have mine plugged into usb 3 ports and I always plug into the same ports ( I read somewhere that you need to do that). I used the x55 profile settings on ED to start and changed some switches around to my liking, and have had no problems at all I purchased an addon front usb 3 2.5 in drive that plugs into a pcie slot and everything works good ----no ghosting

I have used my X55 both from MB usb3 ports and from a powered usb3 hub with no ghosting problems. So long as there is enough power there should be no problems. As for setting up a profile, I too was undecided (saitek software or in ED), but given that there are not too many commands to map I just set it up in ED. Take a couple of hours and play about with your mapping until you feel comfortable with it. I also highly recommended Voice Attack for added immersion and control.

On my Asus P8Z68-V I have the following all connected to internal (directly on the MB) USB2 ports: Logitech G710+, Razer Naga 2014, Saitek X55 Hotas.
For some reason that I have as yet been unable to figure out, input devices appear to dislike USB3.0 (at least on my system)
On the subject of USB power, you may have to check bios settings. some systems have a 'charging mode' on usb ports (I have this option ON)
@ OP: what Mainboard are you using ?
