On the topic of "just map it in ED" versus "use the HUD software", I do a mix. Most stuff I leave as default in the HUD s/w and thus just map the controls directly in ED. But I have some things like the throttle thumb rotary set to bands so I can access left/right panels with it. This seems to work slightly better than just mapping as an axis in ED (although I need to investigate a small tweak to it).
Also, I highly recommend using the HUD software to set/change the main joystick axes (including the twist) to an S curve. I have them set at '710'. Best to play around with what feels best to you. Remember you do need to apply changes for them to get programmed into the unit.
And, yeah, coming from an X45 ... I'm now struggling to find something to bind to a few X-55 controls, it's nice to not have to reach for the keyboard other than for chat/star searches in the galaxy map
