Rhinos are some of my favorite groups of animals. I love that we have the Indian and White Rhinos that represent both Asian and African Rhinos but I feel like we need one more to properly represent the group. The last three rhinos are all Critically Endangered and it's important to showcase the plight rhinos face by introducing one of them. My dilemma is which one?
Personally, I'm rooting for the Black Rhino because of its uniqueness from the white rhino, population in captivity, and overall look and attitude. If we got the Black Rhino I'd want the model to have either more blunt horns than the white rhino or a bigger rear horn as is sometimes seen in individuals in the species.
Secondly, we have the Sumatran Rhino. My personal favorite rhino and the most threatened and in need of awareness. They are the smallest, hairiest, cutest species of rhino. There are less than 80 left on the planet and they are in dire need of all the help they can get. Getting them into PZ would be more about awareness and real-life conservation. A part of me would be depressed to see them so frequent in the market knowing that there are way more of them in PZ than in real life and we just breed them willy nilly in this game, but the real-life good the representation will do is way more important than any silly feeling I have. The last Sumatran Rhinos in captivity moved to Indonesia in 2015.
Thirdly, the Javan Rhino. the rarest rhino in the world with 74. They are heavily protected and their population is stable and increasing slighlty. The biggest issue they face is a lack of territory due to all 74 rhinos being situated in Ujong Kulong and the population might've reached its limit for the habitat. The Javan Rhino was in both ZT games and hasn't been in captivity for a long time.
So which rhino would you want in the game? I personally want the Black Rhino cause it's the most realistic and it would potentially showcase the difference between the two African Rhinos. But, the Sumatran is my favorite and the good it would do for species recognition is important.
Anyways, I would suggest you all visit the International Rhino Foundation's site and see how you can help these magnificent animals thrive on our planet for years to come.
