Ride into the Danger(ous) Zone

I haven't played in a while, but I'm really liking that you can plot routes up to 20kly now. What I'm not liking so much is that over a 7kly stretch I ran into 30 stellar remnants. Two or three black holes, and the rest neutron stars, plus a couple dozen white dwarfs. It's pretty nerve wracking when I look on my route and it's Neutron Star, White Dwarf, Neutron Star, Class F, Neutron Star.

Did I accidently select the "danger zone" switch for routing, or did I just get "lucky"?

If you're over 1000 LY "above" or "below" the galactic plane, then you're in the "neutron star fields" - broad discs where the numbers of neutron stars, white dwarfs and black holes are far higher than at y=0.

Yeah, that's probably it. I didn't know it was the whole galaxy though, I thought it was just certain areas.

That was the old knowledge. After a couple years of experimenting, the exploring community of ED found out that the famous 4 "neutron fields" are instead a single "neutron plane".

The only real exception would be the "supression cross" where the rules are different. You won't find many neutron stars, white dwarfs, or black holes in those areas. They exist pretty much everywhere else, and in large numbers beyond +/- 1000 lightyears from the plane.
