Rift crashing PC After connection

Major problems:

Whenever I connect the Rift headset USB & HDMI togelther (during initial setup) my PC crashes after about 20 seconds.

Obviously I can’t see exactly what is happening as the monitor is unplugged!

Oculus support say that the monitor must be connected with the Rift???

There was no indication that this was required in any of the info I saw prior to purchase OR in the setup instructions.

Of course I do not have a display adapter to hdmi cable and there are not 2 hdmi ports on the graphics card!

PC - Win 10, i7 intel, 1080ti 11gb, 33gb ram

All latest drivers and updates.

Really as an introduction to VR and a very expensive piece of kit I am currently underwhelmed.

Why is your monitor unplugged? They should BOTH be plugged in at the SAME time. You don't unplug the monitor in order to use any VR HMD...

Yes, you do NEED to have both connected. And if your video card only has one Display Port and one HDMI connector then you will likely need to run your monitor off the Display Port. Its a lot easier to find a Display Port to HDMI adapter or cable (downgrade) than an HDMI to Display port adapter (upgrade). I actually have both adapters, but the HDMI to Display Port adapters are relatively obscure and fairly expensive (as they require internal electronics and typically also have a supplemental USB connector).

Run your monitor from the Display Port (NOT the Rift):

- If your monitor will accept a Display Port cable then get one. (Be aware that you may not have CMOS BIOS access unless you use an EFI boot environment if you use a Display Port cable)

- If your monitor only accepts HDMI (or you need BIOS CMOS Access) then get a Display Port to HDMI Cable or Adapter. They are very easy to find and pretty cheap (< $10 USD)

If your monitor doesn't accept a Display Port cable, then you don't need the higher resolutions, frequencies, or features (audio) it provides. Just run the monitor through a Display Port to HDMI cable...

Only one HDMI... sry did you read OP?

On a side note, get an adapter for your monitor and use a display port or DVI-D port on your graphics card, or use an alternative cable (eg: DVID-D)?

You really do need both on as you don't want to be plugging/unplugging cables in over and over...

Not sure if that's causing your crash, but be nice to eliminate it!

EDIT: Grrrr... Ninja'd

Cheers for quick replies :)

1 Is the monitor required as in the ‘VR won’t work’ OR as in ‘not very convenient’?

2 Why isn’t this mentioned in OR setup? Why did I have to spend hours last with this??? Lol. That seems a major oversight.

It just won't work. It might be functionally possible to make it work but the VR environments and launchers are not set up to do this. For about $10 USD you're gonna want to have simultaneous access to your monitor in any case. Like when you flip up your HMD to briefly visit EDD without having to shut down and disconnect everything. $10 well spent...

It does matter which one you get read that thread as YK2 posted this quite a while ago and I use it and it does work well the one he purchased. I have found that it helps after you upgrade the video drivers to unplug it and plug it back in not sure why.

No I completely agree that it’d be very hard to work it without the monitor which is why I was utterly baffled that the OR setup didn’t reference this or consider it in any way. I mean do many graphics cards have 2 hdmi?

Not many usually 1 HDMI and 3 display ports

A Display Port to HDMI adapter is not doing anything other than just isolating the HDMI equivalent signals from the additional circuits provided in the DP interface. It does not alter or improve the image in any way. That's just not possible.

I would run the HDMI monitor from the DP port and the Rift from the HDMI port. However, if you are using an DP-HDMI adapter (vs a DP-HDMI cable) then it really doesn't matter as you can use it for either device.

Its up to the Video card Manufacturer. The chipsets pretty much support exposing the video signal any way the physical card designer wants.

Lower end cards "typically" have 1 HDMI and 1 DP. All cards typically provide at least one DP port because of the higher frequencies and resolutions supported by that specification (specifically DP 1.2).

Higher end cards (ti) "typically" expose 3 HDMI and 1 DP for more flexibility, but its still up to the card manufacturer what they want to do.

EVGA actually includes "generic" documentation in their video cards which show all the variants they manufacture and basically say something like "Your card is has outputs which look like one of the following" and then they show you all the possibilities.

DVI is pretty much going away (like RGB).

I defer don't know enough about that subject to respond have heard others say though that the display ports are always full range where the HDMI may not be depending on the monitor/TV hooked up

The Display Port to HDMI adapters merely isolate the common wires. They do NOTHING to improve or alter the actual video signal. Display Port absolutely CAN provide a faster. more robust signal for displays but the video signals they are tapping for HDMI service have no way to take advantage of this.

Here is the specific pin-pin mapping as used to tap the video signals for HDMI use from a Display Port cable (no electronics or processing involved):

Dual-mode pin mapping
DisplayPort pins - DVI 1.0/HDMI mode
Main Link Lane 0 - TMDS Channel 2
Main Link Lane 1 - TMDS Channel 1
Main Link Lane 2 - TMDS Channel 0
Main Link Lane 3 - TMDS Clock
AUX CH+ - DDC Clock
AUX CH- - DDC Data
DP_PWR - DP_PWR
Hot Plug Detect - Hot Plug Detect
Config 1 - Cable Adaptor Detect
Config 2 - CEC (HDMI only)

Good info thank you

As a side note I think rift works without the monitor. For a while my tv was not detecting signal from my 1070gtx asus with 2 hdmi and I ended booting to windows with only oculus. It lasted for a week until I replaced the tv cable, but it was perfectly useable. Of course I was lucky to have VR desktop starting automatically, so I could see my windows on rift immediately upon boot. Just a curiosity I guess, not very practicable or useful. As far as dp goes, I bought 5 at Amazon for a laptop and rift, only 2 of them worked.

So GunnerBill, have you got it going yet? I am waiting patiently outside JM at Shin to whoop your bottom again at 1v1, but this time in Rifts... [haha] :D [big grin]

I've got the OR configured and am staring agape at the VR homepage...

At the moment it's telling me that ED64 is taking a while to load..

Try opening ED normally, and going into the graphics setting and enabling the output to the HMD, and seeing what happens...
