I just got an adapter - worse problems though... am I going to have to uninstall my PC version of the game first and then reload from either Steam VR or Oculus store via a partner key?

I just spent 40+ hrs watching a loading screen when I got my new PC up and running. It seems like this is just throwing up obstacle after obstacle, all totally avoidable with a little more info.

NOOOOOOooooooo you don't have to. I run a standard PC version of the game in VR and Monitor, nothing to do with Steam or Oculus. Have you done what Neil said?
DO NOT DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just turn on HMD output on your graphics settings!
The only other thing you might then have to do is manually change your audio output to the rift instead of your speakers/headphones. ie: Click on your task bars's speaker icon and change the output.

I've written apps in the past that the public have then downloaded and run, and I know how easy it would be for it to do something "unexpected".... eg: del *.*
I had that with my old GPU (a GTX 960), but since upgrading it's been fine. It used to kick in around the time the game was preparing shaders.
As others have said, you can rune the game in VR just as you did before, no need to re-install.
Enjoy the VR experience, it's a game changer for ED.

Yes, if you are that paranoid Neil, then as you say, stay away from these, but this single simple program is THE BEST VR add on app in the world )IMHO of course). I change often tween Monitor and VR, depending on what i am doing in game or the mood i am in, so this app is SOOOOOOOOOooooooooo useful that i just can't recomend it enough.
Dr Kaii is a trusted software builder (For want of a better expression), and indeed a forum Moderator, so imho a trusted person. Thats not to say his programs are not infallible, but this is one of many he has produced for ED.
Do try it, and maybe as a bit of a coder your self you can have a look at the code and see if it is suitable?
Just sayin, and all above is my humble opinion!
If I was actually changing settings between monitor and VR I'd probably use it... But I'm just on ultra in ED all the time. Plus TBH, the rare times I play ED I'm generally happy to play in the clearer/crisper monitor setup and watch a youtube video or film too.
ps: I wasn't suggesting Dr Kaii would be malicious, but accidents do happen in coding.

I think we would have heard by now with ED Profiler if it deleted files or did things malicious, as it has been around for quite a while and a LOT of people use it?
Really? my VR settings and Monitor settings are like errr different worlds apart. FOV, monitor size, Gamma, LOD, SS, GUI Colours, Anti-Aliasing, Model draw distance, HUD Brightness to name just a few of the different settings!
You must have a brilliant HMD or a really poor Monitor/graphics card setup. even the default settings within this profiler for Ultra Monitor and Ultra VR are completely different?

TBH, not really used the OR much for ED, as not really in ED much. If I were, maybe I'd then discover I need to play around with settings more to improve the experience...

Fair enough, but VR rescued my ED playing, it's a whole new game for me. Yes it is a lot lot less crisper/sharper, but after a time your brain accepts it, well my simple brain has anyway.
