Rift CV1 Setup - its working fine - seeking some advice

Hi folks

Im the proud owner of a CV1 and still enjoying my VR honeymoon period (read that to mean my wife is wondering when Ill be back)
My only VR game of interest is ED, to which i am also new, but several of my friends play it and so they are giving me all the ED related advice I might need, however they are both playing on DK2's and Im the first of our group to get a CV1.

To give some perspective to my questions, and help you know what is possible or not my rig is: Intel i7 4790k CPU, GTX 980, 16Gb RAM and the game sits on an SSD. The rest is kinda irrelevant I guess. So on to my question:

1) Launcher confusion: Its seems I HAVE to have the Occulus software running. Im launching the game via DrKaii's profiler, which in turn opens the Frontier launcher and I click onto Horizons 64bit. The game launches and goes into VR. So why would i also need Steam VR? It seems to serve no purpose (I proved this to myself by uninstalling it and the game still launches fine). Is it unnecessary? Or does Steam VR bring a benefit to the VR experience Im not aware of?

2) Clarity of Text in the cockpit: So I have been fiddling with settings in DrKaii's profiler quite a bit. i can honestly say that I dont notice any change to the clarity of text when I have Supersampling at 1.0 and HMD Image Quality at 1.0, 1.25 or 1.5. Lifting Super sampling to 1.25 and then cycling through the same 3 HMD Image quality settings still yields no additional clarity for me. its as if the settings are doing nothing. i even wondered if they were applying at all, but as i go up the supersampling scale my performance nosedives to the point its jerky and nauseating in VR (but thats not the point - the text is still no clearer). So can anyone give me a clue how to make text better in CV1? Am I applying the supersampling settings incorrectly? Is there any mileage to the 0.65supersampling and 1.5 HMDImagequality approach?

3) Supersampling settings aside, can you guys let me know which of the other graphics settings are the ones which are GPU power hungry? ive already concluded that shadows is pretty hungry. Any other obvious ones i should turn down to allow my GPU more headroom for supersampling?

4) Being honest, with a GTX980 and a 4790k, where are my limits. What is unrealistic to achieve? Dont worry about making me sad - just tell me the truth. I will be buying an AMD 12 core Threadripper system when they launch and pairing with a 1080ti so at some point (September probably) i should be able to increase the supersampling etc. Its just that from my question 2), its not really making any difference anyway!

thanks in advance for for any responses

1) seems to be some sort of bug, was reported many months ago. FD support were suggesting it was an issue on the Steam side. I fixed it by uninstalling SteamVR :) but of course this is not an option if you play any SteamVR-only games.

2) hmmm you should notice some difference in text sharpness even at 1.25 HMD IQ. The AA setting also makes a difference, as does the dashboard brightness and colour scheme of course. I personally prefer SS=1, HMD=1.25/1.5, AA=off, but it's all about finding what works best for you

3) AO is power hungry, I turn it off as I can only see a difference on screenshots and only then if I look closely. Having AA set to SMAA needs more juice.

Try this. Get into the game. Lean backwards in your chair as much as you can, and hit your Reset HMD button. Then sit normally. This will make you sit a lot closer to the windscreen than usual. Then look down, and see how clear the writing is. Change the ingame options (SS, HMD) and see if you can notice any differences.

I bet you can. The main problem, is that most text is normally at a distance that makes SS and HMD settings less effective, as it's limited by the HMD resolution. Also, Orange is a horrid colour to use for HUD in VR. If you fancy a change, I recommend EDProfiler (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...r-Robust-Settings-Profiler-Switcher-Detector!) to change the HUD to green, there is a profile selectable from the drop down menu (VR Friendly). It makes (to my eyes) a HUGE difference in the legibility of text.

I can't offer much in the way of help with settings ( I'm continually fiddling wiv 'em), but your hardware you've listed is an exact match to my own and I have no issues running ED in VR high at all.

Clarity of text is, in my opinion much more affected by HUD colour and brightness. I have mine set to the lowest brightness level + 1, and I use DrKaii's Teal colour in his most excellent ED profiler.

Also, when I reset the view, I lean forward a tad first, so that the side panels are slightly more forward when I'm in sitting in the normal position, it saves me having to turn my head 90 degrees to view them.

Hey guys, OP here.
Thankyou for all of the responses, very helpful.

Ive been using DrKaii's profiler for a few days now and boy does that make making changes (and comparing different profiles) easier.

Ive settled on a profile (ill post it when im home) which is working pretty well now, but im still not convinced its improving my text clarity.

Its broadly supersampling 1.0 and hmd image quality 1.25. The rest of the settings are highish aside from aa which is off and shadows on low.

Ironically, having just praised the profiler im having an issue. I can select and see in the gui chooser the various different gui schemes. I choose one, hit ok and i can see all the rgb settings change in the main profiler. But in game no change to colours at all.

Now my game is in a non standard location as i have it on a fast ssd

Is this why gui changes dont work?
