Rift now shipping in 2 business days - upgrade from DK2 worthwhile?

Should you splash the cash? Dunno.

I recently upgraded to a CV1 and I'm happy with it. But don't expect a massive wow factor that you got with the DK2.
It's like upgrading from a 26" CRT TV to a 40" HD LED flatscreen.
Sure it looks better but the same old s**t is still on.

But If you can spare the money then do it as at the least the DK2 will not be supported indefinitely.

Not true at all. To change the IPD for either the DK2 or the CV1 you have to hex edit 2 DLL files in the latest runtime as the native IPD settings do not work at all. On the CV1 all you have is lens separation, which although serves to make things comfortable, if you have an IPD higher or lower than the default setting, games will and do have the incorrect scale - Elite being among them.

OK then: without farting around with DLLs and hex editors every time Oculus update their runtime and those hex positions potentially change in the code, then you can't alter the IPD- DK2 runtimes had a software way, Oculus Home does not natively. In other words, owning a DK2 is more of a ball ache than it used to be.

That you said "cards" plural, suggests you are trying to run ED VR in crossfire mode. If so, this is known to cause judder, Try disabling one when playing ED. Also Oculus doesn't support multiple gpus.

Good catch. Yes I have 2 such Cards and I think I have crossfire on. With the latest Radeon System thing I am completly alinated and can not tell what is on or off and where I can set what anymore. However it runs trouble free although I have to use Trixx to mod the fan profile. I only have that wiggle in 1 of 10 starts and if I have it I can restart and it is gone. So not an issue. But thanks.
I am not a fan of AMD Cards. I usually prefer Nvidia Cards. But for that one PC I had to go with AMD Cards. I had never planed to use that PC as a gameing platform.

To close the loop...

...placed order on Wednesday late morning, had device in hand by Friday afternoon which I was quite impressed with.

Overall impression is that it is a quality piece of kit and that it is a (small) step up from the DK2. Packaging and hardware feels like it's designed for prime time.

I don't find it as comfortable as the DK2 - to get it positioned properly I need the top of the face surround to be resting on my brow. Perhaps I'm slightly neanderthal in my bone structure but this is a little uncomfortable but perfectly bearable for the few sessions that I have been able to play (only 30 or so minutes at a time so far).

I don't really notice the reduced FoV unless I'm looking for it, and certainly when busy it's not remotely perceptible to me.

God rays are there but don't bother me overly - in general I'm busy doing stuff and they don't even factor in my perception. I can see that they would bother some and, of course, I'd prefer it if they weren't there at all but in general it's fine.

No problem with head tracking - that feels crisper and more reliable than the DK2 - perhaps due to the increased frame rate.

Visually, it's a small step up. The SDE is still noticeable but again, only if I'm looking for it. Biggest improvement, but still with some way to go, is the clarity of the text and HUD display items. Sadly the red pixels are still a problem. I switched back to the classic HUD colours and whilst it's a big improvement in general clarity over the DK2 it still feels like there's further to go.

Finally, I had no problem getting the device connected and recognised by the computer. The runtime did some firmware updates when everything was first connected and I ran through the setup without a hitch. The debug tool was showing a solid 90 FPS everywhere which was as expected.

I then fired up Elite and had it crash on me 2 or 3 times, then when I did manage to stabilise things no matter what pixel density and graphics options / in-game SS settings I chose (even with 0.5pd and 0.65 SS) I couldn't get above 77.7 FPS in Riva Tune or in the debug performance monitor. Figuring that a GTX 1080 ought to be able to outperform the settings on my GTX 970 setup, I uninstalled the Oculus runtime, rebooted and reinstalled from scratch.

This worked without a hitch and I'm now getting 90FPS in game. Some tweaking to do with graphics option settings and perhaps a mild overclock but I'm actually reasonably happy.

So the $64,000 (or £530) question: is it worth the upgrade? In my opinion, just about. The performance and quality improvements are not worth it on their own, but knowing that I'm future-proof for the time being and that I managed to get a fair price for my DK2 makes up the difference.

TL;DR - moderately impressed with the upgrade, some teething problems which were resolved. God rays and FoV not a huge issue for me. No buyer's remorse. Well, not much.

Cheers,

Mark

Lastly, although the CV1 is lighter with a much more premium build and feel, I actually found the DK2 more comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The CV1's foam is a bit too firm.

Coming from a DK2 and Vive, I automatically tightened the straps to keep those goggles on my face. It resulted in not being too comfortable and a lot of "Oculus Face." I found I can greatly loosen the side and top straps, and wear it like a baseball cap. It's much more comfortable as it no longer squishes my face against the harder foam. You can rotate it where it connects to the side straps to get the view in the sweet spot.

"Not too comfortable"
I have to loosen the straps on the cv1 as far as they go and it is still to tight.
I first followed the recommendations for adjusting it an after a few minutes felt like my skull had been placed in a vice.
And even as loose as I can get it I still end up with oculus face for two hours after use.

Seriously the vive is way way way more comfortable to wear.
