Rift + Touch Controller

Looking at purchasing Occulus Rift & it's various attachments. Currently setting up X-55, albeit slowly, and wondering if the Rift Touch controllers are "needed" or "desirable extra" or "not needed you half-witted loon" Just starting out on this new pretty Elite having been an Elite fanatic back in the day on Ye Olde Commodore 64. And yes I am a pensioner

Thanks for any advice or humorous mocking, even sarcasm is welcome if it is of sufficient quality

See you all (Eventually ) on the other side

Touch controllers don't serve any purpose for Elite Dangerous BUT ... they are absolute masterpieces of ergonomic design in form and function and I strongly STRONGLY urge you to get them. This is coming from an ED nut with over 1500hrs in-game who barely plays anything else, but ... when I do occasionally dip into things like Google Earth VR or Tilt Brush or Robo Recall ... OMFG. Get them, I very much doubt you'll regret it.

Ty for replying before I had even posted my query, much as I expected but was keen to know benefits outside ED

Cheers

Indeed I second getting the touch controllers.
Not strictly needed for elite.
But everything else with the rift and practically all games now and future rely on them heavily.

I consider the originally included xbx controller a novelty.
I use mine for playing Batman arkham and saints row games on my htpc.

I would also agree that the Touch Controllers are worth getting. They currently are not much use in the game (the X55 is WAY better; I have an X52), but I have made a suggestion for future development that would make use of the Touch Controllers. When Space Legs becomes active (whenever that may be) it would make sense to (for those that have them) use the Touch Controllers (and their equivalents on other VR rigs) for the Player to move around (but their normal controllers for handling the various vessels).

Not needed for ED, but get them, and then get RoboRecall. And enjoy -tis insanely silly fun.

If you do download Robo Recall make sure you have a decent amount of space around you when you play. Punching a wall (that you cannot see) as you throw an object HURTS!

My words exactly :) and +1

Greatest fun ever for casual gaming and good for a daily fun workout and some creativity. No use for Elite, but the included second sensor makes tracking in Elite much better, especially when walking around in the cockpit.

Yup this, a must have as part of the VR experience, a fair few decent games to use them with too, so worth the money.

Yeah and isn't robo recall still included with the touch?
And that's $30 back right there.

Especially if you end up demoing vr for someone, elite will probably be the past game you want to show, even the techiest of gamers get flustered if you blind them to the real world and park them in front of a highly custom bound HOTAS.

No You are much better off showing robo recall or some of the polished steam vr games.
And yes most of then work very well with rift as well.

ED in VR ( I have a rift) is a game changing experience. It will help if you already play with your Hotas in 2d as you will be familiar with the controls that you will no longer be able to see.

I suggest playing the training missions through first. When you click launch on the (2nd or 3rd) training mission and pop up into the space station the sense of size you get compared to 2d is extraordinary, I am a bit jealous of you seeing it for the first time.

The touch controllers are £99, if you can afford them get them but not as others agree for ED.

Once again some of the stand up touch games are fabulous,
However I do find my play with them stood up limited to an hour before tiredness sets in.
In ED sat down I can do VR for 3 hours straight
in 2d I am only limited by my bladder.

You can now also get (currently for free) Google Earth VR for the Rift. This needs the Touch controllers to work, but now you can wander around the Earth, any time day or night (and change whether it is day or night at the location you are visiting very easily).

That's a good point about steam vr. They say that the CV1 is compatible with steam vr, but you aren't going to get anywhere if you don't have touch controllers. Steam VR Labs is also a lot of fun.

For $20 you can get Doom 3 BFG off Steam (if you don't already own) Mod it for VR and texture and you have "full "Touch and voice control as well. My favorite Touch game. I am excited for upcoming Skyrim, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein VR editions that will have Touch support.

Thanks to one & all for information, just the she-devil to convince, which will be helped by all your comments. Glad nobody has mentioned costs in any great detail, "the full set-up retails for quite a modest sum my darling" is the plan, then block all access to Amazon UK etc

Cheers

Rift with touch is quite cheap actually.
If you compare it to decent, large sized screens supporting more than 60hz.

They would easily cost $900-$1500 at least.
I for instance could play elite on my 65" Panasonic dx900 that cost me £3000 last year and my full 7.2 surround setup.

I still prefer my $600 rift.

I'm not trying to brag about my sucking money pit of a hobby, just saying with VR and a decent HOTAS.
YOU are flying spaceships. Compared to on a monitor where you are basically playing a video game about flying spaceships.

I have been flying VR exclusively since last summer, probably around a 1000 hours worth of game time.
And I still get the "wow, this is so cool" feeling on an almost daily basis.

OK, she'd kill me if she knew I posted this here but perhaps it will help. It's my wife's first experience in the Oculus ... just look at the joy and excitement on her little face! [heart]

My wife had quite the opposite reaction. She exited shapely nearly crying. The full immersion was a bit too alarming! She was impressed but it was a bit too real. :)

There are a bunch of free stuff you get with a brand new rift which make excellent use of the touch controllers

Art: Medium (modelling) and Quill (3D canvas) - both are surprisingly powerful
Shooters: Robo Recall, Dead and Buried (multiplayer/ co-op shooter)
Google Earth VR: Wow. Just amazing.

Don't forget all the Vive stuff too: The Lab and Steam Home (or whatever it is called) are both stella

Whether you play IRL or not, Golf Club VR is great fun and great exercise. Tracks excellent on 2 sensors on the diagonal.
