RIFT visuals - please clear this up for me!

Ok, I need some confirmation that my Rift isn't faulty, and is working as advertised :p

Quite simply, I'm getting blue edging, a little like chromatic aberration when looking at anything that isn't dead centre of my vision. Regardless of how much I try to reposition the headset it's always there. For comparison, imagine looking at a targeted object dead centre of the cockpit. That looks fine. EVERYTHING else all around it - stars, other targets, all writing - it all has a blue 'shadow'. I don't notice it quite as much in other games, but then Elite is virtually the only game I have that is predominately black in colour.

Fuzziness at the edges of my view are not the issue, as I accept that as part of the lensing effect.. but I just want to make sure it's a common thing, or have I yet another dodgy Rift (that would b 3 in total with varying issues)?

Thanks folks :)

You do get a little bit of this yes. It's just the way the lenses are - but don't forget that not having the focusing set quite right can also cause a little bit of this.

Well, we don't get much choice regarding the focusing now, thanks to fixed lenses... It almost feels to me, as if the blue colour is just not in the right place, a bit like an offset newspaper looks when the inks are not aligned.

I changed my HUD to green, and that helps with the text, as there is no blue, there is no bleed. But on stars, they simply look terrible, with awful blue shadows that is very distracting. Considering even my Daydream doesn't have these issues, I'm not really sure if it is the lenses in some way, or 'just the way it is'. It's a shame, because I can deal with the low resolution and other shortcomings of VR 2.0... I don't hear many people mention anything about it, Godrays are most people's complaint, and I have learned to live with those.

While the focal length is fixed, the focal point is not. If you were to go through the Rift setting up procedure, there will be (about half way through) a green + sign (with three vertical and three horizontal lines). move the headset up and down until the horizontal lines are clear (with no ghosting), and then tighten up the 'over head' strap to hold the headset at that height. Then move the lens slider until the vertical lines are also clear. Once you have done this the image should be clearer.

Done that multiple times. It's very very difficult to get the horizontal lines to be clear in each eye. Vertical lines are no bother. My IPD is 70mm, the maximum the Rift can support, and I'm beginning to wonder if my eyes are simply too far apart to ever have a clear image :( I would have thought not, as the vertical lines are fine. I'm also wondering if there really is a fault with my lenses, and like I said, horizontal lines are impossible to line up for each eye simultaneously.

The other possibility is to get prescription lenses made up for your Rift. I have not tried them myself (although I am considering them), so I cannot say how good they are, but there is a company who does make such lenses. They also have a coating that cuts out the frequency of blue light that can affect sleep patterns;

Supposedly, my optician tells me I have what we would refer to as 19/21 vision... I don't need glasses... apparently. I'm not su sure but I don't get paid her wages :p

I have a pair of anti-blue glasses I used to use until my monitor did the same thing (Flux seemed to cause issues with some games for whatever reason). I might dig those out and try them...

I haven't had my IPD measured but I have my Rift set as wide as it goes, luckily it seems just right for me and I don't get the effect you talking about.
If I move my head rapidly to the side I get a little, I think they call it black smear but only minimal so maybe it could be down to your lenses, I've read not all Rifts seem to be the same as far as quality control goes.

There is always going to be lots of artifacts with lenses in a VR setup. Light bends differently depending on the angle. What you are seeing is perfectly normal. However, there could of course be slight variations between the manufacturing but but should not be noticable because the chroma, fuzziness when looking at the side without turning head, god-rays and so on is so much pronounced compared to a 2D monitor.

But all these small things is totally negligible when compared to the VR experience :)

That's the frustrating thing tho... it's distracting me from enjoying Elite in VR more than is comfortable. For comparision, I recently played Batman VR (which absolutely NEEDS a full game, I was Batman, I felt powerful. Then I danced in front of the mirror...), and that experience was pretty much spot on, so I am definitely blaming the black background as a catalyst for the terrible distortions. I find myself constantly having to move, adjust and generally fiddle with the headset while playing, and that's not very good for muh immushun either.

Plus it's so damned uncomfortable! I think I need one of those vridge interface replacements with the cuddly padding.. might make it easier. I do appear to have a odd head - I checked it with spirit levels and rule, and well, it isn't particularly uniform... one of my eyes is quite a bit lower than the other :D Maybe that's my problem!

--Edit

I just loaded Elite up again, and oddly enough, the blue shadowing seems to be gone - as long as I adjust the headset so it's quite high from my cheekbones, but it's certainly playable again.

I'm wondering if this could possibly be a software issue of some sort...
