Rift with voice attack. “Tune out the sniffs”

I’m having problems with the speech recognition while in the rift where voice attack picks up and interprets every little sniff, snuffle or exhale outside of normal speech as a one word command, usually as “mark”. This ranges from irritating where I just get an audio response saying “can not comply” all the way up to game killing

“Boost on my mark”
//exhale// - me promptly goes full afterburner into the side of the station I’m trying to leave.

Have done the windows voice training a number of times now in the hope that it would gradually tune out and subsequently ignore these as background noise but there doesn’t seem to be a decent sweet spot levels wise using the built in rift mic where it’s low enough or trained enough to ignore sniff/exhale but high enough to get a decent hit rate on the recognition for everything else.

I realise this might be better directed to the va forum guys but I’m registered here and you all seem like a very knowledgable bunch with this sort a ting

Can anyone help?

When voice attack consistently misinterprets something I do/say, I change the voice command it's getting confused about.

Alternatively, have you tried playing with the confidence level in Options?

1: check your confidence level, set a requirement like around 80 or so, meaning it will not trigger commands on things it isn't sure off, which most of those, exhale things happen under.
2: check your voiceattack script, to make sure it actually 'waits' properly.

Ok found the main issue. VA kept setting the mic level back to 100 on launch. Bit of further research reveals that whatever the mic level was the last time you did the speech recognition training, is what it resets back to the next time an app requests that it start listening. I redid the training on a lower mic level (around 90 in my case) and now it’s MUCH better.

Still getting some incorrect hits on “mark” but I reckon I can now tune these out with confidence levels in va. Phew!

Thanks for your suggestion commanders

I wonder if training on the Rift mic would help. I suppose you'd have to use the voice trainer though Dash 2.0 to make that work.

Haven't got VA open ATM, so going purely by fuzzy memory, but four things you could try:

1. VA has a command "confidence" setting. Change this in whatever direction causes VA to stop guessing so much i.e. it is less inclined to finish the command for you. Don't go too far as VA could then hesitate with legit commands.

2. Vague thought that VA has the option to list words you want it to ignore (or similar). If so, put in the word that appears in the transcript when you sniffle, etc. (as that is what VA thinks your saying when you do those things). Not wise if it is a word that is actually a command.

3. Search VA (using the word filter) for "mark" in the command. Disable the command if you don't need it. If you do, substitute "mark" with a word that sounds completely different. E.g. "boost on my mark" could be changed to just "boost" or "boost now".

4. Search VA for the "cannot comply" voice response and remove it from the command. Won't solve the underlying problem, but less annoying.

If all else fails, the VA web site has a downloadable manual. Its long (about 160 pages), but its bound to have something on this.

Usual caveat. Back up your VAP first in case you stuff it up trying any of the above. :)

I launched the other day when my wife popped her head round the door to giving me a thrilling update on the progress of our LUNCH.

Yeah, well, it was probably time to leave that station anyhow.

I get Astra saying "unable to comply" a lot even when not giving a command almost like she is picking up game noise no other noises are happening in the room anybody know what that is? Too sensitve on the mic maybe?

Adaptive and Acoustic are both active should i disable something here?

Once after a few late night beers and a super-hot chilli sauce kebab (with extra onions) - I burped really loudly and Astra in all her wisdom, deployed my landing gear .. [haha]

I have VA boost with the command.

"Hit the blower" if you get that obscure movie reference you are a God.

I had been using Voice attack with a headset for a while with great success before I got my rift. When I first started using the rift I had nothing but trouble with Voice attack. What I learned is I had to create a new windows speech recognition profile for the rift and redo the speech training while using the rift. I used big screen to bring up the speech training with the rift. It has been working great since then.

I have Man flu......................

What you on about Wasp0 i hear all you asking........

I have had to load an extra Chaff launcher as every time i sniff i drop a Chaff!!!

You see, this Man Flu really is just short of a death experience, women just don't understand, and now i can launch Chaff!!!! The NHS will never understand this!!

Great thread!

Every time I take off my rift it activates my ‘Python’ command.

Is that your 'Trouser' Python Command ;) :)

I wouldn't know what you are implying!
