RiftCat - VR in cardboard

Today i tested new solution for VR via Cardboard & clones.

Currently this is on the beta stage, but in my humble opinion this is the best way to make cheap VR in Elite i ever saw. It works better than Trinus and Moonlight.
Access to Beta is free and easy

Riftcat works on some way of emulation of Vive in Steam VR, so Elite is working like in Vive, not any SBS mode. Headtracking works good and overall effect is nice.
I tested it on Galaxy S6 and GTX 970.

You just need to have SteamVR opened, and You should see in Elite danerous new 'HMD' option in 3D menu.

It have built-in headtracking via Gyroscope and it works good. I flied yesterday about 2 hours on SGS6.

And one more interesting thing - i used it via WiFi... and i had no delay or bandwitch problems.

i couldn't get it to work. Was fine on the monitor, but was flickering on and off. Will do another test tonight.
What headset are you using?

Just tried this on my S6 and it does work much better than anything else I've tried so far. It is also a much more straightforward. The way it ties in to SteamVR is really great as it means I can select HMD in Elite and it just...works, brilliant. No messing around with 3D split views.

Tracking was pretty smooth though I did experience some minor drift...might be an S6 Active issue

Quality left a lot to be desired (USB tethered) but I wasn't expecting a whole lot. Unfortunately it was blurry enough that I couldn't see any of the markers in the docking guide UI.

Canyon runs are a blast though!

Use 2.0, or at least 1.5 multisampling in Elite graphic options. Today Rift Devs will ad 2.5K resolution for stream.

Ahh, yes, forgot about that, will try it tonight...though I may have to step down from Ultra...not sure the 970 can handle that...1070 is looking awfully tempting.

on 2.0 you can get a little delay on HT (known issue, they are working on it), but on 1.5 it is fine. I am curious how it will work on 2.5K.

OK, i just tested new version on 2.5K resolution, both on 1.0 and 1.5. Both modes gtx970 can handle and in both cases text is readable, much better than it was.

Have a bit of time so prepping this but have one question.

With SteamVR do I have to link Elite to Steam? I don't want Steam to get any of the money I spend on Elite, or have to use Steam to load the game.

No. If you have SteamVR installed and functional (as RiftCat should do) and ED set to 3D: HMD Headphones, ED will talk to SteamVR. No need of a Steam Key for ED. I am running ED on Vive in this way.

I added a quick guide video into the first post.

Limited time but got this working to an extent o_O

Ok, VR is nice :D

Kyo, what settings are you running? It's smooth on my s6 but looks blocky; this may be how it is, and I'm not expecting Rift quality VR but would be handy to know what to expect.

Oh, gfx is an r9 280.

I am running on ultra settings with 1.5 multisampling and 2560x1440 resolution - 60 fps on gtx970 g1.

In the new version of RIftcat they added new methods of headtracking - it may be helpful for players who experienced a drift.
