Been playing ED now for the better part of 2 years. My style?? Pretty much seat of your pants; flying, trading, exploring - just do it how ever the mood directs . Never pay much attention to module/weapon stats either - just install the best I can afford until it gets A rated (I'm a financial analyst by trade - get enough of that analysis/number thing at work); <shrug> works for me, I have fun, generally, but because of it I'll never be one of those guys with billions of credits in the bank and a fleet of Anacondas and Corvettes at every station in the bubble and elite in every class. I call my style, "Gumping my way thru ED", a reference to the Forest Gump movie main character.
Anyway, while Gumping my way thru ED, I lucked out and did the right thing for the wrong reason.
Got bored with Bounty Hunting with my Python so for awhile I've been using my Asp Explorer to haul sheep (that's passengers for you thin skinned politically correct snowflake types); Make a lot of money doing that for factions you're allied with. So just for the break I decided to combat load the Asp and rid the galaxy of a few more scumbags. Keeping in mind that even though I've gotten pretty good at pip management I usually keep at least one shield cell bank aboard my combat loaded ships just in case - yeah - that's the ticket - just in case. The only space I had left, though, was the size 6 space. Hmmm, I thought. What the heck. Got plenty of power available, got heat sinks I rarely have to use, why not load a big boy into that slot. So I put a 5D SCB in the slot, lost a LY of jump range which pulled Bright Star's (that's her name - Bright Star) jump range down to 34.83 but what the heck - good enough for a combat ship.
Cool - let's giver 'er a go and off to the nearest RES (high) site (hey - I'm in an ASP not a Python). After taking on a 3 ship NPC wing and having 2 of the 3 shootin' at me at the same time I was down to one shield ring (did I forget to mention that my shield generator is a 3A) so I pushed the SCB button and flipped the heat sink toggle on my HOTAS and DANG!my shield was fully charged back to full 3 ring strength in maybe 8 seconds??? Excuse my elation but I was used to my Python SCB taking what always seemed like forever to recharge and sometimes not all the way. BUT! I Didn't have time to worry about it right then so I fininshed off the wing and high tailed it back home to figure out what just happend.
1) Fully powered shield strength in joules with the 3A 138 (or close)
2) The 5D recharges at a rate of 28/second after a spin up of 5 secs.
So with a full ring left when I hit the switch 8 seconds to fully recharge the shield makes pretty good sense. I wonder what putting the 6 in that slot would do? Hmmmm....
Forest - thanks MAN - where ever you are!
