Ring reserve info and map data confusion

This has been my no. 1 problem with the game and I’ve had enough so I’m asking.

What the hell is going on with the map? I don’t even know where to start.

Completely unexplored systems are straight forward enough. You get there and scan with detailed or simple scanner. Nice.

I’ve been trying to find pristine Ice rings for a mining mission. It is not easy. Some systems have system data already, for some, I can buy, for some I can’t even buy anything. I have no explanation for this, but whatever.

When I have data on one, one gas giant shows reserve quality (not on the rings but the giant itself which is strange), but a different one in the system doesn’t. This comes from an already owned system map that I didn’t pay for or explored myself.

The map/exploration system is confusing as . It’s really a mess to play the game if I want to mine at a good place or if you just simply want to understand what the hell is going on.

Could somebody explain this? No guide I have encountered covered this issue.

Usually systems that are High Tech, Industrial and Agricultural will have their full stats available. Systems that are Refinery, Extraction, Military, Colony and Terraforming won't necessarily have them. Could be something to do with population sizes, I don't know. The caveat to this is when there is a combination of systems but as long as one is one of the first three then you should be able to see what they contain via the Gal Map. This is usually the case but there are exceptions especially when you're looking at edge of the bubble systems.

You can buy exploration data for a system when you are within a set distance of that system. I don't know what the actual distance is (possibly 20ly) but it is usually constrained by the goods movement lines (the pulsing coloured lines from system to system). Any systems that are outside the 'local' movement of goods will require you to move closer to them in order to purchase their exploration data although you still might not be able to buy it because it's not available from cartographics, so you'll have to go there and detail scan those systems yourself.

Putting your mouse pointer over a ringed gas giant or any other ringed planet should give you the make up of the rings that encircle it as long as it's already a known system for everyone or has exploration data that you purchased for it or has been detail surface scanned (not just ADScanned) by yourself. If you're sure that there is missing information on a system put in a bug ticket.

If you don't mind using a third party tool then this -> https://eddb.io/body <- may help you. :)

(All you need to do is select System Reserve e.g. Pristine. Ring Type e.g. Icy. Then put in the reference system e.g. the system you are currently in, then click on Find Bodies then click on the Ref header to sort into closest to you.)

I agree that system maps can be confusing. But it seems that the reserves level is always the same for every planet, ring and asteroid belt in the same system. So if you can see the information for one of them, you can assume that it will be the same for objects that don't show the information.

yes this seems to be the case. with expo data i always wonder if its down to whoever first scanned the system. scanning the nav beacon will give a detail level 2 scan of all objects i think but to see reserves and mats of planets you need to level 3 scan. so maybe the planets you buy nobody has doen a level 3 detail on the ones without the reserves and mats and ring info.

of course if you want you can search for pristine reserves in one of the 3rd party websites. thats how i found a system near an imperial high tech system to go mine and allow me to grind rank.

What exactly are these levels?

Thanks for the input BTW. It was quite helpful.

Reserves are a system wide value. It shows on belt clusters by default, other bodies require a detailed surface scan. And as you've noticed you already have the data for some systems.

Also system data can only be bought within 20 ly of a port you are docked at (the same area from which the port won't accept exploration data). Similar to data from a navigation beacon this does not include details.

Confusing, most of all.

I prefer naming things by what they are.

The discovery (knowing about a bodies location). You get this via firing a discovery scan or being in proximity of a body with a discovery scanner installed. You also get it via scanning a navigation beacon (inhabited systems only).

Surface scan. You get this via targeting and pointing at a discovered body (name/type/basic details).

Detailed surface scan. Same as above with a detailed surface scanner installed and online (adds additional scan time). This will reveal planet materials and ring types.
