RIP stealth builds... Kinda.

Emissive rounds effectively trashed silent running builds, but now with the new night vision mode, you can effectively highlight and never lose sight of those murky black little stealth ships you might otherwise have struggled to keep a fix on visually.

Yep, try it and see...

Editing in this later post as a pretext for better understanding here... As follows.

OK so my original post seems to have resulted in some people thinking I'm a silent runner griping over this change. I'm not a silent runner but I do combat some people who do. This was based on night vision adding a new element to the game that works against their builds. This is a hypothetical thread.

Being PM'd that I'm crying salty tears apparently because my "Pay to Win" black paints no longer work. Quite funny how far off base that crap is! This thread was nothing to do with any of this nonsense. It was me highlighting what I consider to be a major tool for combat in certain situations now. Nothing that upsets me here since I don't try to hide in the dark. 😂😂😂

Anyone else muddled by my OP should refer to this one instead for more clarity.

Don't see a problem.

Its not like the spaceships are supposed to be made speficically radio silent and non ferrous merely because you stuck black paint on the top of it. So why would you expect it to be invisible to non-biological sensors such as night vision?

If they sold ships that were specialist stealth ships, you might have some gripe. However, even steath bombers were easily seen by old tracking equipment because they operated on a band that the stealth hadn't been specced to avoid, it being so old school that the designers didn't see it as being a threat. So even with a special build (where you will therefore have to lose performance everywhere else), you're not going to be ACTUALLY invisible.

Nobody flies with NV on, so you'll get a sneak attack anyway, and a few more depending on their knowledge of night vision and black paint jobs slowing down the thought of turning NV on.

The skins are supposed to be cosmentic, not a pay to win feature. Complain too much and they'll have to address the black paint jobs so as to remove the complaint that this is a pay-to-win product and therefore exploitative.

Your ships are covered in lights, and leave engine trails anyway, and the radar still gives you a rough direction to look, and you can hear where the ship is.

So, being lit up like a Christmas tree is probably the least of your worries. :p

1: night vision only works if they are looking at you, if you are stealth they wouldn't be.
2: this changes nothing in relation to that 'stealth' is more to avoid weapon lock, fixed can still hit you, and any movement you make will have show you off even with midnight paintjob.

so yeah, this isn't really a 'problem' as such as it is an extreme edgecase that is highly unlikely even without this change, unless someone can actually provide solid proof that this is a viable long term combat tactic?

Dunno, AFAIK it never really worked. At least not in a 1v1 and against someone capable of visually tracking an engaging a Ship (?)

The only protection it ever offered was against Guided Missiles or Turrets, provided no Emissive hits were taken. Lock-breaker PAs effectively provide the same small benefit against Missile boats.
Other than that, a Target Lock is an entirely optional aspect of Combat :)

What part of silent running is pay-to-win?

It's a bit of a stretch but he probably means the Midnight Black paintjobs.

Of course the Midnight Black ship is still covered in lights. I would pay for a true blackout Black paintjob.

I think we all know how to effectively counter a stealth ship. But there can be times when a lock on isn't possible if you lack the emissive rounds, and when you're up against a very quick Viper, Eagle or DBS with dark paints it can blend very well into the backdrop. Nightvision eradicates this, which is the sole highlight to my thread here. So it really does stomp a foot down on any silent runners that little bit further.

Some say you won't use night vision during combat but in the black of space, it only lights up the ship, so it could be mighty effective.

What is all this pay to win absolute nonsense? This thread was a hypothetical based on tactical elements in Elite. Black skins pay to win? Lol!

Not like you can't see all the little tiny thrusters going off all at once that look like spikes from a distance anyways >.> Doesn't matter what paint job you have, unless they come out with "black" thruster color it won't matter.
