The calculation is not based on straight kill numbers. It also depends on the rankings and I think types of ships you take out.

I've been trying to reach Dangerous for ages. Think I had around 1500 bounties when I reached Master and I'm now close to 2500 bounties. I understand that FD don't want to reveal how rank is calculated, which is fine, I have no problem with that. Some form of progress bar would be helpful though to give you an idea of how far you've got to go until the next increase in rank.
