Road to Riches - What Ship?

I prefer to use either my Diamondback Explorer or my Asp Explorer. The DBX with an engineered (not god rolled) A rated FSD and light weight mods gets it to almost 52LY, my AspX gets to about 47LY range, great for shortening time between targets.

Python. Largest ship that can land on medium pads too. Big enough to carry around whatever and able to defend itself well at the same time. :D

I understand why you are doing it but the ‘Road-to-Riches’ highway shortcuts a lot of the gameplay that Elite provides. I spent one evening running the road, thinking that it would help but quickly came to the realisation that it suffocates the experience that Frontier want you to have.

Take part in CGs, bounty hunting, conflict zones, passenger missions, (mining), BGS manipulation, Engineers and exploration and you’ll quickly rack up the cash to buy a better ship.

Running the road-to-riches highway, carrying out jump, scoop, honk, scan will give you a very one dimensional view of what there is available to you.
Best case - you have a load of credits to buy an overpowered ship and then are back to where you were before the road,
worst case - you become disenchanted with the game and put it down / move onto other games.

If you want to run the road, do it in a cobra mk3. That’ll give you everything you need without unnecessary spend.

Cobra Mark III is actually an unnecessary spend. The Adder can do everything a Cobra III can do in R2R for less than a fifth the base price.

The Cobra III isn't a bad R2R ship but it's not a particularly good one. Of the early ships, the Adder and ICourier are probably best for the job.

I used my baby DBX, stripped down for nothing except range. One adv disco and a dss, plus an SRV bay for those long-trips. She's small, runs cool, and gets the job done!

I don't know what I want to do now lol. I don't have horizons yet, and I'm on the fence about getting it.

Did a little more playing with ship building sites and it turns out my Type 6 could work great for exploration. I currently use it for short lived passenger trips, and I love to fly it. Passenger missions are my favorite activity so far.

I'm rank 3 with the Empire and want to keep leveling that, so I'm thinking that maybe ill just be more bold with my passenger selections and go to further systems, and with multiple stops. That way its still kind of like exploring.

With my 58ly dbx RtR was a breeze. I found many jumps are around 45ly, making most a 1-2 jump trip. Also, many less valuable too far out planets I just skipped and would end up with a 60+ ly jump to make between scans. Third reason is I can get back to the bubble faster and with less hassle, and I did it often to cash in diverse factions of interest. I did not take anything fancy like srv or afmu, just a honk, surface scan, fsd engineered and extra fuel tank to reduce refueling stops. For long range exploration I choose AspX or Conda, but for this I go dbx without thinking twice.

I would recommend regular deep space exploration over road to riches. When done correctly - hunting habitable zones in scoopable stars - I would argue it actually pays BETTER than road to riches, and will get your name on unexplored stars and planets.

Either way, a hauler is a good early game explorer. Asp explorer is my all time favorite overall.

Most road to riches routes don't require massive jumps.
Cobra mk3 outfitted for exploration is more than adequate.

Most fun in what way?

It was the most fun to fly. Handles great and sounds awesome.

I don't use my Cobra often for various reasons (lack of space, module slots, firepower, etc.) but for this task it was perfectly suited.
You only really need a full scoop, ADS, DSS, a decent jump range and a ship with good agility.
