Roam or Home?

Should I 'roam' around the galaxy and just go where the missions take me
or should I make a 'home' somewhere and keep getting missions from one station in order to build up my reputation and thus get better missions?

I have a "Home" station at the moment (all my ships live there). However, I'm planning on branching out further (once my Cobra is up to snuff), and going wherever the solar winds take me.

I moved freely until I had more than one ship (AspX/Vulture combo for me), then I settled into a large-ish high-tech system with good outfitting. Most of my ships are still stored there.

I settled where I have a good steady route when I am not out adventuring ... The income helps pay for my wants and new ships & outfitting's ... Do both

Yes - do both - getting allied with factions makes for more lucrative missions, but when they get boring move on - explore, mine, science, trade, trade rares, get permits, unlock engineers.

I do wish I'd kept a better note of who I'm allied with, but it doesn't take too long to make friends in new systems [up]

I have a home, see my sig.

I gather my fleet at or near there once in a long while, but I always end up drifting away.

Just nice knowing there is somewhere I return to after a long journey.

I selected specific criteria which would be desirable in a home system - such as High Tech (for outfitting), in Sirius space (for discounted ships and components) with a nearby RES for bounty hunting, etc - then I searched the galaxy map and settled on one which fit the bill as closely as possible. It meant fitting a fuel scoop and increasing the range of my FSD, then travelling nearly 140ly from the starter systems, but now I have a place to call home...for a while, at least. :)

If you play the game long enough, sure enough you'll end up doing both at some point or another. I started around the starter systems until I saw the Imperial ships, then I left there, bounced around Imperial space for a while before settling on a place I've been using as a home base for more than a year.

do both, there is so much to see.

But, if you have a home, and over time you become Allied with factions in your home system, they give much better missions then in a system where they don't know you.

Yep, I'm doing both, playing my "hobo" style. I go for awhile, and then when I find a place that's interesting, I settle there for a bit, perhaps work up to a new ship, and leave my old ship at this new interesting place. Then I head out again. My eventual goal is to reach "home space" - major superpower / minor faction, and do some PowerPlay and BGS faction stuff.

And then someday, I'm heading to the Frontier (hehehe) to see what's on the edge. Of course, all these plans might be disrupted by the Thargoid invasion..
