Fiction Rob Holdstock dies age 61

Robert Holdstock

I'm a longtime lurker here and on the old Usenet group. The memories thread prompted me to look into Robert Holdstock since I enjoyed The Dark Wheel so much as a kid. I was shocked to find that Mr. Holdstock passed away just this Sunday. I know his story gave us all a lot of fond memories and sparked our imaginations for this great game.

very sad news, i am certain that i speak for all when i say that the Elite communities thoughts are with his family.....

Once again the Guardian obits surprised and saddened me with a gaming related loss. Tim Guest's sudden and untimely death in August and now Rob Holdstock (from an E-Coli related illness apparently).

Oddly I had just been sorting and editing some pics and video I had taken of his recent appearance at the Nottingham GameCity event where he gamely took to the floor and read a section from The Dark Wheel to tie in with the festivals' Elite anniversary celebrations (and with musical accompaniment from a choir no less!).

Very sad news indeed.

Very sad news, even for a person who never got really acquainted with the original Elite or accompanying fiction.

R.I.P.

Very sad, a small part of 'Elite' had died with him, naturaly I echo the previous posters, I wish his family well in the comming period ect.

Even though I never met him, I rember reading 'The Dark Wheel' curlled up in my bed back when I was still at school, I might have to go dig out out sometime and reread it.

I guess as a fan I cannot help but think of the potental loss im that, although I'm saying for one second this would of happned, in the same way a series of Eve Online novles have started to appear in the book shops, perhaps Rob could have written a premotional novel for Elite 4 as part of the premotional campaine leading up to it's releace in the future.

A question to Barchetta though, how much video fottage did you get? Were you able to get the full reading? In any case, would you please upload it onto youtube and let us know with a link when you have the time.

I would like to ask Frontier Developments, all joking aside about release dates, when its done its done. Would it be possible to either incorporate elements of the Dark Wheel into Elite IV or at least name a planet after Robert as a tribute to him? With his family's permission of course.

Excellent idea. There are quite a few places in FFE named after real people so I'm sure something will be incorporated into Elite 4 which pays tribute to him.
