A California man intends to launch himself 1,800 feet high on Saturday in a home-built rocket to prove that astronauts faked the shape of the Earth.
Mike Hughes, a 61-year-old limo driver, said his stunt will be the first phase of the flat-Earth space program, sponsored by Research Flat Earth, a group that believes Earth is, well, flat.
The rocket should travel about a mile at a speed of roughly 500 mph.

Link.

The competition for the Darwin Awards gets fiercer each year.

Also, there is plenty of talk about launching, but I've seen nothing about landing. Hopefully this is down to the reporting and not a horrible oversight.

I love americans...so cuddly and cute...ye really couldnt make this stuff up anywhere else and yet its normal over there...I wish I was american...those guys really do provide the world with a laugh a day at their antics. I wish I could own one and bring it out at parties to amuse everyone ^

So, he's expecting to go a mile. Presumably straight up.

1 mile is 5,280ft. Angels 5 isn't that high.

He could charter a private aircraft and be flown much higher than that for (I'd guess) a fraction of the cost.

It's steam powered and he expects to travel a mile, distance not height.

Also I found a youtube video by Flat Earthers claiming that he only has that 'Flat Earth Research' logo painted on the rocket for the sponsor money!

He should be careful and watch for a certain Twoflower trying to sabotage this...

The idea behind being careful and launching oneself into the sky in a steam powered rocket doesnt really make fer common sense. Its not proof he needs, its a straightjacket and meds ^

MadMikeHughes.com? I think maybe someone already tried (and failed) to install docking clamps on Mike's ambitions. The fools!
