Rogue Cops?

So there i was last nite cruising along minding my own business when i get interdicted by a Cop (nothing new but not a frequent thing). As habit I assume a defensive posture by deploying hardpoints and running medium speed aimed at my target system while waiting for the first shot so that the interdicter is fair game for a fight. Well out of the blue this cop opens up on me without so much as a "Hello Citizen, prepare to DIE!" message or a scan or nuthin'.

Well i don't fire back but he stops firing and we do an aerial dance for a bit until i get bored with that and jump out to my original destination. Shockingly he follows me and proceeds to open fire on me again as i am trying to dock. i'm thinking ? He never even got thru my shields so there was no damage done but I am still dumbfounded by this event. Sure I was running illicit cargo but he never even scanned me to see it (and fine me) and i never took a shot at him either. Something did pop up in the local message center but it faded before I took the time to read it.

Maybe he attacked me because I didn't retract my guns? Or maybe the last NPC I smoked was his brother? LOL

Or maybe the cops are just going rogue like they are here in the US!

Strange. Anyone else run into this scenario?

Yep, I got this yesterday for the first time too, sans the interdiction. I dropped out of SC at my destination station and immediately saw laser fire coming from a lone ship behind me, passing just by my ship. Initially he was green coloured on my radar so I knew it was local security (which I'm allied with) and assumed maybe he was shooting at someone else near me that wasn't on my radar for some reason. Then I got hit and he turned red. Like you- no warning message, no scan, nothing; and what's more, all the other local security ships around the station entrance remained allied to and took no interest in me.

I'm guessing this is a new feature that's come with 1.3's altered mission system. Since it changed I've noticed NPCs take a much more intense interest in the missions you undertake, I guess this occasionally extends to maverick cops too.

There are assassination missions where you are asked to "retire" members of security force. If he was spouting dialog it might have been an event from one of those missions.

You do come across some mission events even if you haven't taken the mission.

Hm. This is interesting. I'm wanted in a 30LY bubble around my base of operations with no small bounties on my head and jolly continue to waltz about these systems like nobody's business.

I wonder what preceded the cops going rogue / psycho in your scenarios. I'd actually LIKE that happening believe it or not.
