General / Off-Topic Roj Blake aka Gareth Thomas - RIP

Top bloke, Gareth Thomas. I adored the show when it was first aired and can remember being genuinely shocked at the shows final. Yeah the acting, sets and stuff was wobbly, but the stories at times were pretty decent.

Sad that so many opportunities for a relaunch have never come off.

I have to say I thought Garath Thomas was one of the weaker actors and the program was better without him. But the concept of 35th century terrorists seeking to overthrow the established order, experiencing more luck than thousands normally have yet managing to mess every opportunity, was pretty solid and has a lot contemporary relevance.

I wonder how many have whiled away a few hours imaging how they would construct a reboot of Blakes 7?

Terrible acting, terrible effects, bloody awesome show!

I would disagree as far as Gareth Thomas' acting went. He was a 'proper' actor and I remember watching the shows they would often announce at the end that he was appearing with the Royal Shakespearian Company or whatever - but yeah, Paul Darrow had a way of cancelling that out with his chair kicking and holster drawing antics. :)

And remember Roj Blake appeared in the original Elite as Agent Blake who provided you with one of the missions.

So manny child hood heroes have past away the last few years

From actors to sport icons.

Its a real shame as every death kills something of your child hood memorys .

Okay, I'll say it, I watched Blake's 7 mostly for Servalan, esp. after Gareth Thomas departed after series 2 - even as a kid I remember thinking it got a bit rubbish without him.

I saw Jacqueline Pearce interviewed a while back, and she was hilarious and very direct about her effect on the audience.

Shan't say more as this is a family friendly forum.

:D

Blake's 7 was rubbish.

RIP

I used to think this ^^, back in the day I was a Dr Who fan and laughed at Blake's 7, however.. many years later I met my wife who is a B7 fan and I "begrudgingly" agreed to watch the first few episodes. However it didn't go as I planned as 3 episodes in and I was utterly hooked, the story was interesting, the Liberator was awesome and the characters were amazing. I watched it from beginning to end and from that day I have become a B7 fan.

I have talked with many people who hate it and 90% of them never really watched it or didn't watch more than one episode. I suggest you do yourself a favour and watch it on youtube, yes the first couple of episodes are very slow but they are purely setting the groundwork for the series.

Blake's 7 is amazing and today is a sad day, RIP Gareth Thomas.

It started out awesome but tailed off quite badly. Too many cast changes and that annoying "Slave" nonsense in series 4 [down]

Have to agree with you about Slave. It wouldn't have been too difficult to build a better scenario to revive Zen and the Liberator than the knock off Slave, complete with transporter!

But I think the actors were generally superb and the story lines remained gritty. It was the gritty story lines that made the series worth seeing.

The tension between Avon and Tarrent was so much more interesting than Blake/Avon.

One of the more fascinating aspects, and which Paul Darrow pulled off brilliantly, was the way Avon degenerated mentally over the 4 series.. It really was just a matter of time before he got himself and everyone else killed.

It was unfortunate really that Steven Pacey was up against Darrow. Both were equally strong and talented actors, but Avon was already established as the bitter compromised fool, so Tarrent could never really blossom into the psychopath Pacey had created.

I recall reading a review of the series, just before it ended which went something like: A group of futuristic thugs and criminals get outstandingly lucky and stumble upon two of the most advanced and useful pieces of equivalent ever devised. Then, believing themselves unworthy of such fortune, spend 4 series desperately looking for ways to give away their loot and kill themselves in the process.

As an Actors, Darrow and Pacey never seemed to get further opportunities parts so complex, which is really sad.

I recall when Christopher Ecclestone was playing Dr Who, thinking that perhaps they might follow him up with someone equally talented. Paul Darrow came to mind but Pacey would have done the part credit as well.

Sadly, the producers opted for the populist option and re-started the clown theme.
