Role Playing... Just an Idea

[OOC]Greetings and Salutations Commanders

I must confess, until Elite Dangerous came along, I never considered myself as a RP character, I guess I never found a game until now that not only suited my game play, but one that offered a richness of stories and lore all rolled into one package..

I came across this thread a while back and even now when I check for any new entries it still leaves me thinking wow, here is a diversity of characters, from humble backgrounds to more privileged upbringing, all having a perspective of life here in Elite Dangerous that is unique and interesting as the character themselves.

Commanders, I have been toying with an idea I have had for a few weeks now, its a little bold and without your participation, it will crash & burn before it can even get off the drawing board.

Allow me to give you a general overview.

A group of Federation/Alliance/Empire rebels, outcasts, fugitives of the various factions, former pirates, smugglers, soldiers, drunks etc have decided to come together in the year 3301 and create an underground movement to promote freedom of expression in the faint hope of educating the citizens of all factions, to the harshness, inequality of oppressive rule from the various factions within the universe. War is coming, no faction or inhabitable system will be spared. From salvaged, stolen, borrowed materials this small group of people decide to build and equip a small ship that circles an abandoned, now forgotten, mining outpost on some remote moon. It's location will remain a secret since their are many spies amongst us. Since Radio Transmissions are easily picked up by the authorities they choose instead to record their broadcasts and have couriers sympathetic to their cause to smuggle these recorded broadcasts across the known universe. For security reasons, the couriers have no idea of the location of these recorded broadcasts.

Their recorded broadcasts are simply called 'The People's Voice'.

These recorded broadcasts are segmented, thereby allowing sub channels to be easily created. One channel would handle travel logs of individuals such as this commanders log, other channels would contain news worthy items of events and experiences and perhaps another channel devoted to character growth and development. This new 'broadcast' will certainly NOT be like Radio Lave for example, which doesn't deal with RP and broadcasts from the outside in, as opposed to being inside the universe in the year 3301. Radio SideWinder while having the feel and sound for operating in the year 3301, is music orientated and again, doesn't handle RP very much.

'The People's Voice' will be situated inside the universe, in the year 3301, it will feature characters from that time period, it will not feature slick or polished jingles, it will instead sound and feel a little rough around the edges (in keeping with the fact that this is a small operation carried out with minimal/old technology by ordinary people trying to evade the authorities) yet it will have it's own and very unique feel about it. It will feature stories from around the universe, it will highlight life, as simple as it is, as it happens under these chaotic times, it will feature stories of wars and conflicts that effect you, perhaps your home planet is effected by conflict or war right now, perhaps your thinking of taking part in one in defense of your home system. Or maybe you have had to relocate to another system with your family/friends recently, what is life like for you right now? What future do you see for yourself?

The People's Voice will also be introducing original Elite & Elite:Frontier stories (Licensed under Creative Commons) for those who were either too young, or not around when these classic games originally came out.

In a nutshell, 'The People's Voice' can be the platform to take your ED characters & stories and give them an opportunity to be heard and seen in a new light.

Long Term Future.

*IF* there is interest from the RP Community and gamers alike for this channel, then The People's Voice will progress to 'live' radio broadcasts via radionomy.com, it doesn't have to compete with any other radio/podcast as it will be unique and one-of-a-kind because you will have made it that way.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas on all of this..

-Malandark

*Update* Work is going well on a new space-themed, full length radio play using only computer voices, sound effects etc, plus a few other new items of interest.

*Update* Had to take a few days off to write a newbies guide for this forum... Also found today a great source of Elite stories that are C.C Licensed and therefore OK to use, time to dust them down and give them a new lease of life!

*Update* Finally got my Radio Play finished, was a bind to finish as I could not stop tweaking it and refining it. it will be included in the first broadcasts. Hope you enjoy it!

*Update* Started work on my second space-themed Radio Play.. Not sure if I can finish it in time for the first broadcast, but will give it a try.

Scroll all the way down this thread to see how this project is developing...

Go ahead man! it can definitely be something interesting.

Thanks for the encouragement! It's quite a big undertaking for one person to take on, however, I have the time to spend on this as I'm semi retired. Over the next few days I will be posting ideas I have detailing the concept of 'The People's Voice', it's beginnings, the characters involved in it's birth, it's possible format and content of presentation etc etc

I really like the idea, pretty interesting stuff and it could quickly turn into something big and engaging. Look forward to read more about this.
Will definitely be keeping an eye on this thread.
I (my character) definitely am a federation product and feel out of place at the moment, clearly looking for a better future...

The People's Voice

radio-icon.png
A Brief Timeline... (Subject to future revisions and refinements)

Set in the year 3301, a group of individuals from all walks of life and from different factions, cultures and professions decide to put aside their differences of opinions of each other, to form an underground movement of free thinking individuals, to promote and encourage Freedom of Speech across the known Universe. For fear of being discovered by the authorities (whom some are fugitives, wanted criminals) live radio transmissions are not possible nor practical. In these chaotic times, governments both major and small factions are imposing more and more restrictions on what constitutes as free speech, replacing independent news outlets with their own propaganda machines.

orange-icon.png
3050 - First Reported sighting of Thargoids ends in hostility.
orange-icon.png
3055 - The Thargoid invasion officially begins. Massive fleets of Thargoid warships carrying remote controlled fighters ruthlessly cut a swathe into occupied human territory, encroaching on a cluster of stars centred around Alioth. GalCop Navy is mobilized to respond.
orange-icon.png
3189 - Japanese company Tomoka Corporation sets up a mining outpost in the XXXXXXX system, on a moon called XXXXXXXX
orange-icon.png
3190 - Tomoka mining outpost attacked by Thargoids and shortly after, is abandoned.
orange-icon.png
3193 - Thargoid invasion halted by INRA's introduction of a Mycoid virus into the Thargoids' living machinery. The Thargoids vanish from human space entirely and Humanity begins a period of re-colonization and revitalization.
orange-icon.png
3281 - A Pirate called Timbus is the first to rediscover the abandoned mining outpost abandoned by the Tomoka Corporation 93 years earlier.
orange-icon.png
3295 - The People's Voice, an underground movement promoting Free Speech is formed by six founding members. It opposes all Faction governments that attempt to control and restrict Free Speech amongst it's populations.
orange-icon.png
3296 A local smuggler known as Chang Zin is hired by two Japanese antique collectors to retrieve a computer module from the abandoned mining outpost left by the Tomoka Corporation. The arrangement goes bad and Chang Zin is forced to flee for his life.
orange-icon.png
The computer module is described as an early prototype of what is now used in Stations today, to control docking requests, in itself it was of no real value other than to a collector of such items. However, this particular relic had the distinction of incorporating a rudimentary multi-voice logic processor, coupled with a damaged, but repairable memory core that could be re-programmed to speak English instead of Japanese.
orange-icon.png
3297 - The founders of The People's Voice, on hearing about Chang Zin's visit to an abandoned mining outpost, negotiate with the two Japanese businessmen to call off their bounty on Chang Zin, in return, Chang Zin reveals the location of the abandoned mining outpost and hands over to them the computer module.
orange-icon.png
The moon itself proves just as interesting as the abandoned mining outpost. It is described as: The moon in question is no different to any other moon you may come across, except for a large deposit of common grade iron near it's core that is shaped almost like a horse shoe. This horseshoe shape deposit of Iron acts like a giant magnet, drawing energy from the nearby class M star, it focuses two weak columns of electromagnetic energy (one positive, the other negative charged) at it's southern pole and where they converge forms a small, magnetic energy bubble, making whatever is inside this bubble, invisible to most forms of electronic scans due to it's scattering effect it has on such scans. Unlike similar, common anomalies of this nature, that are found everywhere that comes and goes over the course of a few days, this one is stable and permanent. While too small for a medium sized trading ship to be fully enclosed within this bubble, a smaller ship, such as a sidewinder would fit easily inside.
orange-icon.png
3298 - Over the course of the next two and a half years, the founders of The People's Voice repair and upgrade the outpost so that it is able to accommodate not just them and their families, but also for the extra 100+ followers that have also decided to seek refuge with them.
orange-icon.png
3301 - April. The People's Voice announces to the Elite Dangerous Roleplaying community it's intention to create a role playing channel just for them that will feature their commander's logs and stories.

only just stumbled on this, semi retired is good for projects. Id give it a listen when im in the mood for some good old fashioned RP.

Welcome CMDR Ross, with some luck and time, I'm hoping to have a 'working' example up and running soon. Since I have one shot at this and firmly believe that this is something worth developing further, I want to make certain it gets the best presentation possible.

Welcome CMDR pippo. While its still early days for this project, in the next few days I will be laying the foundations for it and hammering down it's overall potential as medium for further character development. The idea that perhaps one day, when I want to change from listening to music on Radio Sidewinder (currently playing right now) to catching up on the latest adventures of RP characters sounds very appealing to me, as I hope to those following this thread.

Radio Format & Content..

Char1.png

Broadcast Format.
Since the Federation in particular, has for many years now been recording and monitoring all audio and video transmissions within it's borders, it is not possible for any of us to use our real voices in any of our transmissions, the least they know about us, the safer we will be, as will our friends and family. Using some old technology we recent acquired, we are now able to disguise our real voices digitally, until such time when we can find a way to evade the Federation & others, voice recognition algorithms. In the meantime, we understand that some of you might hate this format, give it a try and see how you get on with it, we will be improving our technology as time goes on.

As all Factions and local governments employ covert mobile listening stations to spy and eavesdrop on each other, such is the distrust they have for each other and while we are aware of these, there is no known way we can avoid detection by these listening stations, therefore, all our broadcasts will be recorded on micro-cards and smuggled out via our network of couriers. Because of the sheer logistics involved in organizing these smuggling trips and the high risks involved, our broadcasts will be archived and stored here, on our own Broadcast Bulletin Board.

Broadcast Content.
A Galactic War, on the scale never before experienced by humanity since the 3055 - 3193 war with the Thargoids is almost upon us. Once this happens, all Factions and Governments will impose their own steps towards Martial Law. Freedom of Speech will be heavily censored and suppressed and the propaganda machines will be taking over. Here in all of this chaos and confusion, we shall stand firm and strong in bringing you the truth that they would rather you didn't know about, spreading your voice far and wide across closed borders and into the homes of friends and loved ones.

Our service, as humble as it is, is open to everyone and is completely free and without obligation, we ask for no credits or cargo payments. Doesn't your family, loved ones and friends deserve to hear from you?

Our service will broadcast the following but not limited to.

Your Commander Logs (Complete or serialized into segments)

Your stories (Complete or serialized into segments)

Your space/Elite themed Radio Plays

Your up and coming Event Reports

Your tales of recent adventures

Classic Elite Stories

GalNet News Items

I'd love to participate in this. I could definitely see this working and being popular, I could even see it expanding towards the Alliance, since the Alliance has tendencies like this.

Greetings Commander Pegasi, I am Jake, one the of six representatives for 'The People's Voice, we are always looking for new perspectives and ideas to further our cause, have you seen our updated posts above this one?. As you can appreciate, our political views are somewhat biased as we have only experienced life from outside of these political arenas, but a fresh outlook/view from someone such as yourself would certain be appreciated. If you have any material for our up and coming broadcast, scheduled sometime in May 3301, then by all means forward it onto to us.

Jake.
