General / Off-Topic Ron Howard Takes Over Untitled Han Solo Directors Chair

Yeah I saw this. They fired the other two because they were trying to make a comedyesque light-hearted adventure. Given the material they're working with it was already looking pretty awful, so the writer went to Lucasfilm to complain and Lucasfilm got shut of them.

A smart move. You can't sell Star Wars movies for kids because most of the people who are fans are well well into their middle ages at this point.

One Jar jar binks is catastrophic enough for a lifetime.

Good, I'm already ^!$@#!# about them butchering the HAN SOLO image.

Its not really Ron Howards forte though is it.

His best films have been historical dramas (apart from Splash, Cocoon, Willow & Backdraft), and none of those are 'StarWars' in the end. He's got a mountain to climb at this point, and if he messes it up it could damage his reputation no end (at the very least with fans).

Personally I would have left it well alone myself.

Red Leader... we have a problem

Ron Howard is a safe pair of hands. His only major fumbles have been with the Dan Brown movies.

He's of an age to understand the appeal of the original Star Wars movie. It'd be great if managed to rope Tom Hanks in for a guest appearance.

Heck no, just NO, Tom Hanks can stay in the airport :D

He makes visually superb movies but I'm not convinced he can make movies with a lot of fast paced action in them. I enjoy looking at 'In the Heart of the Sea' but I just couldn't get into it on any level beyond that.

Ohhh and by the way chaps; Han Solo almost had a backstory as an orphan on the planet of the Wookie thingies. George Lucas almost made things even worse.

The more I hear about George Lucas the more I am led to believe he had nothing to do with the original two films.

wow Ron Howard ... he is good.

i wonder how he can accept that duty for such a poor subject.
maybe i am wrong and the movie will be a succes...

i trust Howard, he is a very skilled director.

we will see...

There's a transcript of George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg discussing how to make the first Indiana Jones movie. It does show a little of the workings of his mind and it does suggest that something as good as Star Wars could originate from him. I think something must've happened to him. It's as if the old George Lucas killed the young George Lucas, and he is now more cash register than man.

"Rush" did have a few action bits in it, but I do agree with you that it isn't really his forte. The reason they may have wanted Richie Cunningham is because of a bit of a fashion in movies these days to get away from CGI special effects... which is a little difficult when you've got people floating in space. Well the director of Apollo 13 has a bit of experience directing just that.

Plot spoiler. Millennial Falcan breaks down and they spend the whole movie trying to fix it.

I have a theory that Disney secretly want to ruin Star Wars for Adults just dumb it down to sell toys.

There is a already a spoof coming out that received no opposition. They already lampoon it before release.
