Rookie question

Hi all, I am new to the forum and would like to ask what is probably an obvious question that has been covered before (apologies), but what kind of PC should I be looking to upgrade to in order to play Elite Dangerous ? Are we talking alienware here or would a normal run of the mill PC be able to handle it ?

Cheers

Hi Martin,

Welcome to the forum. :D

Best place for you to start would be here.

Rig to run elite

The current min specs are.

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System Ram (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU, 1GB video RAM(my reasonably low end machine has a GTX 285 with 2GB) Minimum video ram spec updated to 1GB.

Have fun. :D

heck no, not unless something changes (there is still much to add). We have reports of it running on fairly ordinary lap-tops. I have a three year old nvidia 560gtx ti and run it at max everything with 60fps.

Hi Martinpne, welcome to the forums! :)

As T.j. mentioned, these are minimum specs available as it stands right now, but i believe these are primarily for the alpha at the moment and might change. They're a good start though and as Frontier go through the development process and optimise the game they're more likely to get lower than higher :)

Getting a new PC? Almost any quad core with somewhat decent GFX* will be fine. For 3D or big screen (higher res than 1080p) full 'oomph' you might want to scale up a bit, towards the 'alienware' or beyond. :)

If you have only a few years old "run of the mill" quad-core PC with somewhat decent (for gaming) GFX and at least Windows 7, you should be fine.

* Nvidia - go for GTX 600 series or newer, aim for at least 650 or higher, bigger number packs more punch in same series (e.g 670 beats 660, but 470 beats 620), and even more with a "ti" added to the end
* AMD - go for HD 7700 series or newer or R7 - R9, bigger number packs more punch in same series, even more with an X added to the end

really might be best to upgrade much later. Wait until the game is released and see what the prices are like then. If you want to take part in the Alpha/Beta the chances are it will run on what you have anyway, and you will also be helping by adding to the diversity of the hardware being tested.

Funny seeing lots of posts on the Star Citizen forums "what PC should I buy?" "what Spec should I upgrade to?" to think that by the time the game comes out the spec they buy now might be much cheaper and might not even run the final game so well.

Does the game still have the reported issues with AMD cards? If so it might be a good idea to go with Nvidia.

If you can wait, you should rather to build a powerful computer, and with an energy efficiency. A base Haswell for the processor and perhaps a Maxwell to second generation for the GPU. But it is necessary to wait for a few months to know Maxwell's interest. I prefer to spend a little more expensive to buy components and to save up on the electricity bill

Count on ati bugs getting fixed. I'd wait for the oculus rift and the geforce 800 before upgrading. Not worth putting big money when the next generation is right around the corner.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm really looking to upgrade pretty soon as I think my PC was used as ship's computer on Noah's Ark :) I was a big fan (addict !) of the original Elite on my old Sinclair Spectrum back in the day and would love to give the new version a whirl. I'm currently looking at a PC with the following specs:

Processor Model: Intel Core I5-3350P Processor
Processor Speed: 3.1Ghz
System RAM: 8Gb Ddr3 (2 X 4Gb)
Hard Disk: 1TB 5400Rpm
Video Graphics: AMD HD7350 (1GB) DVI/HDMI

I really don't think that graphics card is going to be very satisfactory to be honest.

Have a look here: Best Graphics Cards For The Money: March 2014

Make that AMD HD7770 for example, much better but not too expensive...
