I thought that "Don't use Zyxel and D-link" and "Use VPN service if you don't want to include your ISP in your internet security" would be generally accepted rules, by now...

To be fair though - your average Joe Sixpack who buys "the Internet" isn't likely to know the difference between a home gateway and a potato. The ISP's providing the equipment are at fault here - especially as they know the kit is full of vulnerabilities.
