Rtx 2080 ti + Vive Pro = Satisfying VR

So, my 2080 ti came in last week and my Vive pro came in Tuesday.

So far, I havent spent any time PLAYING elite but i have spent some time just messing with the settings and im SUPER SATISFIED with how VR looks now.

I always though the Rift was meh and the Vive was Bleh so i barely played vr (even though i owned both headsets). Just experiencing vr in them was cool.....but they just looked SO G BAD!

That is no longer the case with the pro. For the first time, the graphics in VR are "adequate". There is obviously still room for improvement but at least the PRO looks good enough that Aliasing, SDE and general crappy looks aren't the only things i see when i step into vr.

I was hesitant to buy the pro because im interested to see the pimax but i can honestly say that even if the pimax visuals are better, the vive pro makes VR plenty good enough (which is something the original and the rift could never do for me). Also....if i have an issue i can return my hmd to best buy. I dont think an rma would be nearly as convenient with a pimax.

As for the RTX 2080 ti.......there isn't much to say. I went from a 1080 to a 2080 ti so my performance in most games has almost doubled. But benchmarks can tell the story way better than i can so im not gonna bother. What i WILL say is that the 2080ti STOMPS the 1080 in VR performance.

Lastly..... I thought I would mention, I actually love the performance of my 2080 ti and the Vive Pro and would recommend them to anyone. BUT, if you are the kind of person who is going to complain about price, or performance per dollar ratios..... just keep on walking. They aren't for you.

If anyone has questions let me know.

Congratulations on that purchase. I hate you, you know that :p

If I enjoy the VR and ED with my CV1 + Nvidia 1070 I get an idea of what you're enjoying with the Pro + 2080 Ti :)

I just want to ask you a question have you had to update micro to live up to the 2080 ti?

Can you put a screenshot with the settings you have in VR in the ED?

Thank you.

While i dont have a vive pro, ive been enjoying the 2080ti with the rift for a week or so, tbh, without any reliable way to benchmark vr in Elite, it's almost indistinguishable from the experience on a 1080ti, 90fps lock, everything maxed etc, but it's still pretty cool.

I'm glad to hear the image quality has improved with the new(ish) gen of headsets, as this was the thing that always crippled my enjoyment of vr.

"Crippled my enjoyment" is the PERFECT way to put it.

I reached a point with the older HMDs that i just wouldnt play elite on them any more. As a matter of fact, anything attempting realistic graphics looked so ugly i just didnt bother.

Wouldn't mind some seeing comparisons on this thread.

I have a 1080 ti with the current rift and feel that the graphics are OK, which is to say:

- reasonably clear
- text is readable
- some screen door but acceptable
- aliasing obvious but not annoying
- good colour range

No doubt VR has plently of room for improvement, but can't say I'm unhappy with the current offerings based on my rig. What's the general feeling in the VR ED community?

As a stop gap I purchased the Samsung odyssey whilst waiting for the pimax. There was no way I was buying a Vive Pro at the current price - not because I couldn’t afford it but because HTC should be ashamed of themselves!
It’s not as comfortable as the rift or my original vive but neither have seen any use since it arrived. When I return to uk in DEC I’ll hopefully collect my pimax and a 2080 ti. The 1080 I’m currently using is fine for the odyssey but I think the pimax will make it blow up!

I would be very interested in your views, on your new kit once you’ve played ED.
Especially compared to your other hmd’s

I recently purchased a 2080ti as well, and having a blast on most games.

Currently maxed out all settings in ED profiler (SS 2.0, HMD 2.0, all on ultra), and 200% SS in Steam VR.

What settings were you able to use?

I am glad to hear that the new generation of tech is a solid improvement over the current stuff... My most sincere congratulations on your new toys. However as a gtx1080ti / Oculus CV1 owner, I toyed with the idea of making the same purchases as the OP did, but decided instead to put the disposable coin into a new toy with tyres rather than wires, although I am really looking forward to my Titan RTX powered pimax 8k in about 6-12 months.

you actually don't really need more than 1070 to enjoy VR in most titles. I have P4k which is higher resolution than Vpro and everything runs great...
my res per eye in SteamVR is 3400x3420

Pimax 4K:
- 6Dof not supported
- Only supports 60FPS
- LCD Single Panel Design (1x 3840×2160)
- 1920×2160 per eye

Vive Pro:
- Supports 6Dof
- Supports 90FPS
- OLED Dual Panel Design (2x 2880x1600)
- 1400 x 1600 per eye

The lack of 6Dof support and the lower refesh rate would be deal breakers for me. Looks like an OK budget HMD for the most part....I read some reviews which say that the ghosting (likely due to the poor refresh rate) is almost unbearable though. Then some others about gyro drift forcing them to 're-center' the device quite frequently.

Maybe its because Im old but I cant get the bitter taste of the overpriced 2080ti & a Vive Pro outta my mind. I just dont see the value in whats on offer with these VR setups. Too little difference in quality, too high a price.

nothing wrong with you.

op owns both a rift and a vive and doesn't use them because 'meh', still buys the most ridiculously overpriced card and headset available to 'mess around' and finds it a 'satisfying experience'. says it all.

that said, that's the best vr combo you can get right now. if money is no concern ...

And what if money and framerate is a point. I know upgrade from GTX980 to 1080ti woudl eb already big improvement.
Sad thing is that you never read any testing on a bit older cpu's like the 4970K with newer cards like the RTX2080ti.
You really need graphics power to keep at the stable 90fps in VR and not drop to far below it. It's easy to spot.

At the other side, you can now boy a 1080ti for around 700-800 euro.
And the money you safe by not getting a rtx2080ti (around 1300-1400 euro)
you can use to upgrade to a better card in 2-3 years.

It's a hard choice.

That makes two of us...I'm on the fence as because soon as I drop 2.5k on a Vive Pro and 2080TI something new and shiny will come out!
Why couldn't you have just posted a thread about how poor it is and how people should wait and stick with their OR CV1 and 980TI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You and me both. I could go out and order both of these right now, and my CC wouldn't give a damn, but the fact that they are overpriced so much would sour that enjoyment throughly. That, and the fact that from the early impressions it looks like Pimax 5k+ currently kills everything that is out there with clarity, sweetspot and fov. And that ridiculously overPROiced vive will start gathering dust or lose a heck lot of value pretty soon. I happen to be friends with someone who is in first 130 pimax backers, we're awaiting shipment any time soon. Sadly due to US doing a panic buyout because of China tariffs, all shipping lanes are full :(

I will even reinstall elite to try it after I get my hands on the 5k+ unit for testing.
