RTX 3090 driver 465.89

Just a heads up to save anyone all the hassle I’ve just been through. Using my HP Reverb G2 and Steam VR.

I installed 465.89 because it is supposed to be better with MSFS 2020 than good old 457.30.

Whilst it is indeed better for that it turns Elite into a stuttery mess, oddly only when focusing on the game for some reason. Click out of the game and it’s smooth.

I rolled back to 457.30 (after trying lots of other things to fix it) but the problem persisted.

Turns out 457.30 doesn’t like Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS), which I’d left turned on because it’s better on with the other driver in MSFS 2020. I’d tried turning it off with 455.89 but it didn’t help.

I’ve put in a bug report to Nvidia since sorting the VR issues with 30xx cards really isn’t going well!

TLDR: 465.89 sucks with Elite on a 3090 and don’t turn on HAGS!

I'm using it 465.89 on a 3090 Strix OC with rebar and Win 10 HAGS and it is smooth as butter.

Even downclock the card to 1620MHz coreclock to play Elite because even in 4K it runs at 28% load

Yep, 100% concur. I installed it, took a quick spin in MSFS 2020 (with HAGS enabled) and very nice, although not I think a massive improvement for me, but definitely nice and smooth.

Fired up ED (Horizons)! Awful, text blurry (at least blurrier - but was crystal clear before), galaxy map blurry and stuttering and when jumping to a new system everything almost comes to a stop for a second or two. Outside that, in space, killing a pirate lord, to be fair it was fine although not better than the old driver, so like you I have gone back to 457.30.

Seems it's a struggle for Nvidia to get drivers working well at the moment.

RTX 3080 and the Reverb G2 here.

Little update. I updated my motherboard BIOS to support resizeable Bar and decided to try again. Now Elite runs great with 465.89 with HAGS enabled.

My PC is currently away since the motherboard for the PC (MSI Z490-A Pro) was actually one intended for an Aegis PC, not the PC I had bought! And due to that I couldn't update the BIOS to support resizeable Bar... Anyway, once I get it back I'll try it and if I get the poor performance (I have an RTX 3080) I'll add to your ticket.

Frankly, as time passes I'm more interested in playing MSFS 2020 so it may be a moot point for me. Last I tried with Odyssey was in the second alpha phase, and it was Ok, but much depends on what is in the game other than FPS as I have no interest in FPS shooter games and if there's not much new to do when flying spaceships then despite having the LEP I can't see myself investing too much time or effort to ED. :(

Thanks, I know what you mean about MSFS 2020. It’s absolutely fantastic! I frequently come out with random expletives because I can’t believe what I’m seeing and it’s only going to get better with DX12 and DLSS etc.

Unfortunately Odyssey is a train wreck in VR and I doubt much will be done to resolve it any time soon. The one thing I was interested in (new planetary tech) looks bloody terrible in VR, more like mine craft with LOD pop in. I’m hopefully that what we have now really isn’t the finished version but expect it is 🙁

Well, just got my PC back... That was a long haul I have to say!

What with downloading the games and putting it all back together I haven't had much time to play, just did one quick flight in MSFS2020 and then went into first Odyssey then Horizons.

Odyssey VR performance was poor, framerates rarely getting to 75fps. Horizons was better, getting the usual 90fps outside of stations, but still stuttery. I updated to the latest Nvidia driver, 466.something. (It's really hard to justify staying on a driver as old as 457.30, and MSFS seemed pretty smooth at decent settings with 100 render in game and 80 in OpenXR - which I'll probably drop to 70.) Graphics quality set to VR High (in Horizons at least) which frankly my PC should be able to do.

PC specs - Intel i7 10700k, RTX 3080 (Gigabyte Gaming OC 10G), 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD and now an MSI Z590 Pro WiFi motherboard. Reverb G2 HMD. I have not as yet (managed to) or bothered to enable Resize Bar as that will require flashing the GPU vbios and probably the motherboard too, and I really don't know if it will make much of a difference. I also have not enabled Hardware acceleration. I'll play around some more in the coming days to see what can be improved graphically.

I missed most of the Odyssey alpha due to the PC going back for repairs, and unfortunately I have to say I really didn't like the new UI when I logged in today although I imagine that's just a matter of getting familiar with things, so logged out and went back to Horizons, but will no doubt give it another shot at some point.

I've read benchmarks that show that resizeable bar has almost no effect at high resolutions. Maybe 1% or 2%.

Maybe something else impacted performance.

Well, I tried dx11 mode, deleting graphics settings and going to mostly medium high. Latest 466 driver.

I'm getting 30 fps in stations and it has dropped to even 20fps outside of stations when flying close.

They would need to double performance for this to be any good. I'm only getting 45fps in light-speed travel in the middle of space. Something is very wrong.

I'll probably focus on other games until this gets sorted out. Tweaking is not much fun.

Also, I couldn't take any missions. I'll probably return to try out some missions.
