Hardware & Technical Rudder Pedals: Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudder Pedals or CH Pro Pedals?

I'm considering getting pedals and I'm wondering which set is more worth it.

I've heard that the CH Pro Pedals are somewhat closer together and therefore have been uncomfortable to some. Has anybody experienced both sets of pedals? Any preference for one over the other?

Does the large price gap make any difference what so ever? Are the Saiteks worth the extra cost?

Finally, I'm playing on mac, so I won't be making use of the Saitek drivers, that much I know. Given that, would it make more sense for me to just go for the CH Pros instead?

I'd love your thoughts and anecdotes if you have them! Thank you and fly safe CMDRs!

I can definitely recommend the CH pedals. Got a set cheap on Ebay, they do the job fine, very smooth action and nice to rest my feet on when I'm not playing.

I don't think you need things like adjustable tension and pedal length that the Saitek offers. The CH pedals fit my size 10 feet just fine and the spring is the appropriate strength, I wouldn't want to adjust it.

One thing to bear in mind is that like all CH gear the pedals are extremely simple and therefore easy to repair. Being second-hand, mine came with some pretty severe potentiometer spikes where I'd push the pedal and nothing would happen, then it would suddenly jump to a higher value. In Elite the ship would drift slightly to the side until I kicked a pedal to zero it again.

Apparently that's a fairly common problem with these pedals, when the connections on the main pot work loose with age (the wires are clipped on, not soldered). But it's simple to fix, I just unscrewed it, used pliers to squeeze the clips tight, and now it's good as new.

They're like the Fisher-Price of flight sim gear - feels like they'll take a beating. I've ended up with the CH fighter stick and throttle too, both of which are also excellent.

I have the Saitek x-55 which I'm greatly enjoying but want to save my wrists the pain of the twist-to-yaw. Which is why I was thinking of getting the pedals. Sounds like they're a good, basic product that does their job well.

Seems not so great that the wire comes loose though... glad they're easy to fix.

I've heard the Saitek are a bit more comfortable but you haven't experienced any issue with the width of the pedal placement, they don't feel too close for you?

I have had the pro flight pedals pedals for years and still kikkin it, can't comment on the CH. I don't use the rudders for flight in elite but I do use the toe brakes for thrusters.

I use the Pro Flight Cessna Rudder Peddles and love them. I think these are tougher than the CH but it's probably just biased opinions. I use the left toe brake for boost and the right toe brake for Frame Shift Drive.
Also to free up other things, I use the toe brakes for up and down thrusters on landing override. As long as I never forget if my landing gear is up or down...

FWIW...I have saitek, but couldn't use them for ED. Combat just requires too much fine tuning with the yaw that my legs couldn't do. Also, it's a bit of a fatigue factor after a while in a RES or CZ. I also find them to be at too steep of an angle. I wish they were flatter. *edit: I also agree they are too close together.

For ED, I use the thumbstick on my throttle for yaw, and it works much better.

I do use them in DCS world. It's a different use scenario though.

Good luck.

I use a full CH setup and love it. As far as pedals go, sure they could be a bit wider but they aren't uncomfortable at all. I'm have an 11.5 double wide foot and plenty big enough. And as a previous post says, they are simple and easy to diy repairs, if they will ever need them.

Ah, I meant width not in terms of width of the pedal but in terms of width between the actual pedals themselves. Some people have referred to the CH pedals as "nut crushers" and said that the Saitek pro flight are more comfortable due to the the wider "stance".

CH pedals, aka "the nutcracker" in simming circles back when I was a hardcore flight simmer.

I've had my Saitek pedals for about 7 years now and they're still going strong.

I find them quite comfortable. Don't know what that says about me, though. If they were wider I'd probably have to sit closer, which isn't possible in my setup (they're butted up against a strip of plugs at the back of the desk to stop them moving).

Wouldn't want to be without pedals of some description in Elite. It's just a shame that the yaw movement is so slow by design, you could do some amazing manoeuvres if it was as fast as movement on the other axes.

If money is no object, I have confirmed the Main Performance PC SimPedals work with Elite: Dangerous. I set mine to use left and right yaw, as a bonus, I programmed the Y-Axis of the hydraulic brake pedal to active Boost; no accidental super speed happening here. :) Seriously, these pedals are awesome also, you can adjust them laterally individually to your own alignment. Even though they are designed for racing, I won't hesitate to use them for ED and Star Citizen.

Unfortunately, money is an object. I ended up going with the Saitek PRO Flight Combat Rudders and they should be arriving sometime this week!

have the Saitek pedals and like them lots. I have the toe brakes set as right > forward thrust and left as reverse. I find them very handy for landings.

Apologises for resurrecting an old thread but I have a questions.

I have just purchased the Pro Flight Combat rudders for use with a worthog.

I am using Windows 7 and the rudders were added automatically.

Using the windows game controller, I can see that the z-rotation is working with the yaw and is analogue in input. The peddles are also showing analogue input in the x/y axis.

I have assigned Yaw Axis in Elite to the z-rotation and I am happy with the analogue input here.

I can not find a way of assigning analogue input to the lateral thrusters, using the left and right pedals.

The only option I have found, is a single one, which will take either peddle or digital inputs for both peddles.

What I would like to do is have analogue input from the left peddle applying thrust to push the ship right and analogue input from the right peddle, applying thrust to push the ship left.

I can only do this with digital input, on or off.

Any suggestions and or work around?

Cross post as I have now found a solution...

Hi there,

For yaw and laterial thrust, I am using the saitek Pro Combat pedals.

Out of the box, yaw is straight forward. getting analogue output from the pedals so that ED could uses it, took some external software. The Combat pedals have two analogue outpust but ED will only allow you one input.

Using vJoy and UJR, I was able to create a single axis by merging the two, applying it to a virtual joystick and then binding the virtual joystick to ED.

For those interested;

vJoy Device 8
X Axes ticked, 0 buttons, 0 POVs, Enable Effects unticked.

UJR
vJoy Stick ID 8
Axes 1
1 (X) [Rest L] 5 1 Invert (ticked)
Axes 2
1 (X) [Merge] 5 2 Invert (Unticked)

ED failed to see the vJoy input in options as the pedals output was milli-secs quicker, so I used the Bindings options to send the output during setup without pressing the pedals. Worked perfectly and in the .binds file, the text reads;

<LateralThrustRaw>
<Binding Device="vJoy" Key="Joy_XAxis" />
<Inverted Value="1" />
<Deadzone Value="0.00000000" />
</LateralThrustRaw>

I only have vJoy running one virtual device, so do not know how more than one would be registered here.

For the others comment;

In addition to the Worthog, I use Saitek Pro flight combat rudder pedals and a PS3 controller for SRV.
