“Rumoured” things to find - any idea how many or needle in a huge haystack?

Not having access to the Beta (PS4) I saw a recent Yamiks video on The Codex.

In said video, he selected the Inner Orion Spur, which is a fairly large area of space in the South West area of the galaxy and I saw the numbers of things in that segment.

This system will have tens of millions of systems in it: for the sake of argument let’s divide the rumoured 400bn systems by 42 which gives us around 9.5bn systems (very unscientific way of doing it due to density etc but it’ll do for this example).

Let’s play even safer and drop that by 50%, so let’s say about 4.25bn systems.

Yamiks Codex screen showed 105 rumoured/reported Stellar/Biological/Xenological items there, which is one discovery for every 40.4 million systems.

I know this is Beta but does anybody have any ideas of the numbers we are talking about actually appearing in the final patched release?

I’m not expecting to make a discovery every jump, but damn - even if you multiply those numbers by 100 that’s still one potential discovery per 4000 systems.

Hopefully, many, many more than what has already been found.

If not, all that's going to happen will be that as soon as 3.3 goes live, there'll be a huge trolley-dash to the places where people have already found stuff in beta, just so they can be the "first" to make a discovery, and that'll be the end of that new content. [sad]

which is one discovery for every 40.4 million systems.
A lot of them are types of things rather than unique things - so for example Silicate Volcanism Gas Vents, which will probably be somewhere in almost every mid-sized system. Or things like Guardian Beacons, which are only found in certain places but are still relatively common in particular parts of the galaxy.

So probably at least a third of systems will have something to find - even if it's just some volcanism of a type you've seen before.

There may also be rarer things which are literally only found in one or two systems in the region - but I would expect some hints of other sorts from Frontier about where to look in that case.

That’s what worries me: there will be a big Cannon type goldrush and then people will be all “meh, what’s the point if there’s nothing new to put my name on?”

I’d be far less inclined to fly into a sector where I saw all the items were reported and discovered on the codex map. I actually think “rumoured” is a bad idea - far better to just post the actual discoveries. If people know what the finite number is, and they’ve all been reported, what’s the point?

Would much rather just have “discovered” and assume that there must be more out there, which will encourage me to go look. I won’t bother if it’s all completed by others.

One of your posts says 10B is too many systems to be searched, and now you're saying you want no hints - which one is it? ;)

Too late :( Fdev seem to have left many things switched on in the beta, and some CMDrs have not tested, but explored throughout. Probably it's going to be rather disappointing - and all fdevs own fault.

No I didn’t - I said that looking at that sector’s figures in the beta that’s 105 out of possibly thousands or millions of systems which is nowhere near enough.

And yes, I still think that even if there were 1000 ‘things’ to find in a sector of billions of stars I’d rather not know how many than see it fully explored: where’s the mystery if there are a known number of rumoured things out there.

I seriously hope you’re joking about FDev running the exploration beta with post-patch items and locations: that would just be plain stupidity, even if they added a lot more in the patch.

They should have seeded a local sector with items purely for the beta and then cleared and moved everything: if they haven’t then that’s it for me - I’m done. I’ve been playing No Mans Sky lately just for something to actually do while I wait for the new patch, and exploration especially.

I’ve read all I can about exploration as I assumed the stuff in the beta wouldn’t make it to the release in its current position and format: if I find some absolute idiot decides that’s a good thing to do then I’m out of here as that would be the height of absolute laziness, contempt and stupidity.

I dunno... that's pretty much how it is now when discovering Earth-likes. Jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump... ooo! Look at that! Jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump...

Although, I'll grant you these codex items will be likely harder to find, especially if they involve scanning and searching planets.

That said, I'm in the wait and see category... as if there were any other. ;)

lol - enjoy NMS :)

This aspect of the Codex is more like achievement trophies than exploration.
There will be loads of each item somewhere in each sector - you only need to find one of them, to tick off that box.

Hopefully, it'll be put to better use in the future for genuinely unique discoveries with a better than 1 in 10 billion chance of finding the right system.

That's why "first discovered/mapped by" ruin the sense of discovery and should be removed IMO.

Beating a dead horse I know.

The numbers OP have suggest about 5000 things to discover in the first round. We found about 15 so far AFAIK. Beta is limited. :)

Your grasp of numbers seems... poor. With one discovery per 4000 jumps, it takes 4000 explorers to discover something every single jump. In other words, everything (42*+-105=4250 things) will found within half a week. If that is excessive to you, how quick do you want everything to be known?

Have we even seen what the rumours actually Say?

What if it was

TEMPLE Section

Mineral feature A Rumoured to be found on High metal Contents world orbiting O B & A class stars in Nebulae
Rare Crystal B Rumoured to be found in Icy Rings of Class IV Gas Giants
Fungal Life C Rumoured to be found on Rocky worlds orbiting L class Dwarf stars that have a gravity no greater than 0.33 and a surface temperature between 22 & 198 K

INNER ORION SECTION

Thargoid Whatsit X Rumoured to be found on Icey worlds orbiting G class stars in Nebulae
Space Caviar Rumoured to be found in Icy Rings of Water Gas Giants
Fungal Life R Rumoured to be found on Rocky worlds orbiting F & M class stars that have a gravity no greater than 0.20 and a surface temperature between 76 & 270 K

Then all of a sudden things can be narrowed down quite a bit.

Seems unlikely. You can look at the current codex location descriptions and they are far vaguer.

I knew this would happen.
I hate being right all the time, it's a curse as well as a blessing.

Seems an awful waste of time and resources, put into designing a pretty radical change to exploration, and the addition of the Codex, to only find the things found in beta doesn't it?

I think some people have so little faith left in FD that they will immediately deem whatever they do a complete failure before checking the actual facts. And as the update has yet to hit live... there are no facts.

OF course... if these people are right... then FD REALLY did waste a LOT of time and effort for absolutely no reason. Considering time is money in business, and all the developers and PR people need to be paid for their work, I'm inclined to believe there is a lot more to find.

Good quesion OP. Really hope there will be many rumours, one of the best features for me in 3.3 if they do it right.
