Rumours about having to pay for an "Expansion pass"?

I just heard an ugly rumour about the possible existence of an expansion pass down the line.

Paraphrasing;
You are to buy an expansion pass in order to be able to land on planets, have FPS fights, etz..
The 60 euro you paid for beta gets you the launch game, anything added after that costs extra,
as they will be considered expansions.

Just how much of this is true? :(
If this doesn't turn out to be complete bullpucky, I'll drop the game right now and cut my loss..
I'm having a hard time believing it though, it would be a bad PR move to ask even more money for an already expensive game.

It's been pretty well known for a long time that walking in ships/stations and planetary landings will form some form of expansion(s) and/or DLC at somepoint down the line. Most likely in a year or so.

As you've been told, this was pretty much the plan for the beguinning. You can still play the game without the expansions, though, and you'll get all the core-game updates for free. And I doubt they'll be 60€ a piece, most likely 15-25€.

It's not a bad move to charge for what is basically a gigantic new game added onto the current gigantic game.

It's not a rumour it is something that has been publicised since day one of the kickstarter campaign. Some features will be rolled in at a later date free of charge but others are major expansions and will come in the form of paid DLC expansions. You don't need to purchase them, they will be optional if you want to enable that functionality.

The servers have to be paid for somehow right? how else do you expect them to maintain them without charging a monthly subscription?

The game was being released in stages:

- Core game first. (Trade / explore / fight / etc)
-- Patches are free to fix bugs & stuff
-- Some patches would be added to include extra small things

As with all major titles there will be add-on DLC, things like:
- Planetary Landing
- EVA (walking about)
- Other TBA items

These would require you to purchase the DLC. (Think a new expansion for WoW, or some new maps & things for CoD)

Not sure if it's still available but you either buy an expansion pass that gives you all future DLC or simply buy the extra DLC when it becomes available if you want. (Guess: every 1-2 years FD will release something major)

The Expansion Pass bought you free access to all major content expansions but is no longer available. Alpha and Premium Beta backers get free access to all major content expansions. Anyone else pays for each expansion in turn.

Also, how is the game expensive? It's not like you are paying for a monthly subscription is it?

No different than any other game, Wow / Lotro etc where the expansions are ~ £30 having paid for the game (although that does vary depending on the model used and what they have changed to)

as there is no monthly subscriptions and I assume potentially large ongoing server costs then I fully expect expansion packs further down the line.
Access to new ships being a regular one, Station access being another, planetary landings (if it ever happens) being another.

Well it was known since Day zero. Check the Kickstarter. Or Any of the Early Newsletter. You may not like it, but ignorance is not an excuse.

Yup, the only question is, how much those expansions will cost. Will it be 10, 20, 30, etc Euro?

Personally, its not a bad idea as it means we have no subscription costs, and you can always skip the expansions you are not interested in. For example, i've heard some people say they don't care about being able to walk around, and others say they don't care about planetary landings, so they don't have to buy those expansions.

Personally i'm so loving the game, that i think if they released an expansion allowing you to wear flourescent underwear on you avatar i'd buy it!

£35 is expensive?

The store actually states purchase does not include expansions and therefore I assumed there would be a paid expansion system
Better than throwing £120 a year down the subscription toilet
I also assume they will be done in a way that makes them optional, such as planetary landings...you only buy if you want to stretch your legs

It's always been the plan, not pretty much. Not sure why an expansion would be that cheap mind you...but speculating about the cost now for something many moons away isn't much use to anyone and all that will happen is ppl will get into an argument about how much is too much and "I'm not paying that!!!"...pointless.
One of the perks of becoming an Alpha level backer of the game is that you got a free expansion pass. This means expansions that come after the original game will be available to you for free...forever.
This perk was removed a few months ago, so for anyone new coming to the game expansions must be bought just like any expansion, for any other game.
I am afraid that this is not a rumour and has been well known for a good while.

Lifetime expansion packs are always a bad idea. I never subscribe to them since you pay a lot upfront and there is no way to be sure you will contiue to play the game for any period of time. By the time the expansion has come out you may well be bored and have moved on to a different game.

The only expansion passes I have bought were for Gears of War 2 and The Battlefield games. I got my moneys worth from those but learned my lesson with Gears 3 and found it dod not have the lastibility to keep me interested. It was wasted money. Nowadays I pay as I go. If a game is good enough and I am still enjoying it I don't mind spending the money. I would prefer that than hand up what seems like less in the long run but still a substantial sum to find the game shelved after a short time.

Planetary landing and FPS shouldn't BE an expansion, that all should be part of the core of the game (even if it gets added later).
If the core game is just a bare bones space sim with nothing really special going on, id just stick with egosofts X games.
60 euros is a lot for what it is now. Other space sims cost less and have a ton more going on.
If its going to cost 90 euros to get a game that excels above others, its getting a bit steep.

how else do you expect them to maintain them without charging a monthly subscription?
Beats me, but you can ask Arenanet how they do it.
People seem to keep hammering on subscription being more expensive, but there are plenty games that make due without it.
Guild Wars 2 has been free of subscriptions and expansions since the start over 2 years ago, and its been getting new content monthly.
So a pay-once game without subscriptions or expansion crud certainly belongs in the realm of possibilities.

I have no problem with paying for the expansions since game does not have a subscription system (like EVE). It's pretty reasonable that they will charge for expansions.
