Newcomer / Intro Run of bad luck?

Hi there so just purchased the game last Friday and really enjoying it so far. However, I feel like the past couple days I must either have really bad luck or I'm missing something. At the end of my second day I managed to have earned 32k credits. I know it's not alot but I was plugging along. I was doing most cargo missions to get a feel for docking, supercruise etc. Most of the missions paid between 5k and 12k credits and if I had extra cargo space I always picked up a few extra items to flip on the commodities market. Also would do some basic exploration as I bounce around port to port. However, the last 8 hours I cannot find work worth doing. Either I get a cargo mission for less than 1000 credits or there are crazy bounty missions that I simply can't do in my startwinder. With the little cash I have I have upgraded my FSD so I can jump further and I have visited at least 12-15 new places most which have no available mission and than ones that do are simply not worth it. I'm loving this game but my last 8 hours of play have simply been bouncing port to port and I'm starting to get a little discouraged. So I be doing anything else? I plan to get more involved in combat mission, bounty hunting, pvp etc but I was hoping to have some credits built up first to invest in my little sidewinder before heading out to start a fight!

Do you check out multiple outposts and star bases in the same sector? It took me a few days to save for my Hauler but in Ross210 I ran internal system trades to make a bit of money while checking multiple bulletin boards and running trades to other systems. Sometimes it does slow down but once you get a bit more cargo space more missions become available.

If you want to do missions, it's better to stick with one area. You will slowly build reputation there, and better mission will start to emerge. :)

Plus what the commander above me said. If you have more cargo space, better hauling missions will be shown.

take one sidewinder, make sure it has 2 guns attached, then go find a nav beacon, resource extraction site or just poke your nose in any unidentified signal sources you spot while in super cruise. target any ships you find, wait for the scan to finish and if they are wanted consider blowing them up for the bounty. things like sideys and eagles should be fair game unless they are really high on the elite ranking. vipers and cobras are also fair game if they have no shields and are low on the elite rankings.

you dont need to wait to bounty hunt, go out there and let rip now! if you enjoy it consider the eagle, it's got 3 guns. then the viper, that's got 4 guns. both the eagle and viper are dedicated combat ships, so you might want another ship for running missions with.

Yea I have checked multiple stations in the same system. Still no luck. I recently picked up a mining laser and was going to try that but don't have the credits for a refiner yet now 😕

Thanks for the tip about staying in a certain areas, I was just moving along g trying to get far enough away to sell my exploration data. I don't want to be a Hauler forever not really sure what I want to do yet. I bounty hunting at first but it's to much of a grind in the stock sidewinder. Maybe if I make some cash I can upgrade him to be a little more formidable.

Lol we were posting at the same time. So I probably made a mistake selling one of my guns for a mining laser? I would say screw it and wipe my save and start over but I have 25k in credits in my sidewinder's FSD and cpu

nahh, buying and selling modules is quite cheap and a great way to find out what you enjoy using. keep your save, money issues are easy to fix, it's poor standings that might be worth wiping for. the only mistake you made was reducing your combat prowess without getting any mining ability :). but that's just a money issue and one you can sort out in due time.

my first day went like this (after a week or so of combat tutorials thanks to pre-order. pro-tip, actual combat is easier than the final tutorial)

run missions, picking the best paying job at each station i deliver to. made 14K, invested it in a cargo run, spread my cargo and the ship all over the station wall while trying to dock

back to square 1

run missions, got up to 30K, invested it in a cargo full of expensive metal. arrive at my destination, dock very carefully, find the import/export info was bogus and end up hopping from system to system looking for a place to sell manually. take a shortcut through a stations rings, busy chatting on skype and not paying much attention. liberally spread my cargo and ship all over the station wall

back to square 1 with a debt to keep my ship upgrades (FSD etc).

decide it's high time i blew some pirates up. go bounty hunting for a while and earn a nice sum of money which mostly goes into upgrades to improve combat

i think that was about 6 hrs of game time on my first day.

i've since stuck with bounty hunting with some missions on the side from a static location to build up reputation. i now have my free eagle from pre-order nicely upgraded, an adder with some upgrades, a viper with great upgrades and a cobra with basic upgrades. it does get easier to make money!

This sounds encouraging, thanks for the post. I missed preordering and don't have the free eagle. Going to run a few more missions tonight and sell off the mining laser and get a new pulse laser and try some bounting hunting I think then. My next question is are sidewinder's decent for this when upgraded? As much as I would love a new ship I kind of like the idea of kitting out my startwinder and seeing how good they can be.

I hate the random chance of the boards and the market seems flaky to me. I'm an explorer now and I'm about 300 ly or so from my starting station. I have found HUGE systems filled with stations and planets - vastly stretched out. Pirate bases where the locals are always looking to try and blow you up, etc.

It's a vagabonds life. I have no home base. I just roam around, scan out systems, dodge pirates and explore the universe - earning my way by finding what systems have to offer.

It's not a rich income but I find stations 'out in the boondocks" that offer all the stuff I could get back in "civilized space" so I'm not worried about getting lost or what not. It's a fun albeit solo/lonely type of existence.

Your basic D-Scan is on your right panel in the cockpit under "fire groups". It is *NOT* assigned to anything. Put it in its own group for use. Empty systems are rarely empty - you just don't know where the planets and stations are at. It's an active tool with a 500 ls range on it.

With that and a fuel scoop, I'm not bothered by going almost anywhere and I do find a lot of neat things while poking around - and I travel. *ALL OVER*. Oh and you'll get really, really good at flying as an explorer. Lots of practice. :)

Just an alternative - you earn by finding stuff then traveling at least 20 ly from where you explored. The farther away, the more you make for your findings but 20ly is the minimum.

Thanks for the reply. I've really considered doing this as well could be fun.

I didn't know that the farther you go the more your info sells for. That's good to know. I was just selling mine as soon as I could.

Just a quick tip if you don't know.

When you re-buy your gun, buy the gimbled type. So much easier to use that the standard fixed lasers that come on the free Sidewinder as they auto target the ship as long as you keep it in front of you.

I upgraded both my free loaned fixed pulse lasers to gimbled pulse lasers and combat got so much easier.

When I upgrade to a Cobra I'll buy a couple of gimbled machine guns to compliment this setup. (lasers bring down shields, guns hate hulls).

Thanks I'll keep that in mind are the weapons clearly marked which is gimbaled an which are not?
