Running ED on potato laptop

I got a free laptop and it runs the Combat Demo.
So obviously then i downloaded the whole game but it doesn't want to start it (black screen).

Any ideas ? Even if its a long shot.

Specs:
P9500
4GB-DDR2
GT230M
Win10 64bit pro

Please don't laugh, it thought it would be a fun idea to have a free multicrew sitting next to me :D

I'm afraid that old girl doesn't have the horsepower. Quad core CPU is the minimum spec and Core 2 Duo is not a quad core. Sorry!

Making some assumptions here: Install the correct gpu drivers

Maybe not enough cores.. But I see no reason for it not to start the game.

i cant update drivers because something above 2xx.xx something doesnt support hybrid SLI in windows 10 :D
took me 3 days to find a working driver !

It will be horrible and janky. I had a Quad 2 Extreme 4 GB with 1 GB GTX 460 and although it ran it would cry often in busy areas. Planet surfaces would be particularly painful.

If you have the Steam or Epic versions of Elite and decent internet - I’d recommend a free GeForce Now account.

I’ve had ED running on an Android tablet with a Bluetooth controller 😁

i expect it to be horrible just wanted to have a go. if i want to play smoothly i have a 1080ti

your whole system is way bellow minimum spec im afraid. iirc the combat demo was built way back when during beta if memory serves

your cpu is too week
same again for the GPU, be lucky if it runs on minimum settings
4gb ram with win10 is not going to cut it though the game will require at least 6gb - win10 although its supposed to run on 2gb minimum with the 64bit OS the OS will use more RAM than advertised

best you can do is try to update your graphics drivers, disable any non esential programs running at startup, disable\stop services etc.

however without more ram if the game runs it will be running at a crawl as it will be constantly reading and writing to the system page file on disk

Lack of DX11 support on the GPU part may be the reason it just will not work anymore.

It's the main reason, if not the whole reason.

ED will generally start, and probably be vaguely playable at lowest settings on almost anything that supports DX11. Core 2 Duo might be cutting it close though.

It's this: GT230M.

The GPU doesn't support DX11 so therefore will not be able to run the game, no matter what you do to it.

Okidoki didnt think about dx11 ... now i want to try on my thinkpad t60 with advanced dock. That has a gt1030!! Or rip out the wifi card and use the pcie riser cable for my other gt1030. :D
