Elite / Frontier running fronteir

Wrong forum. The right is here:

But to answer your question - nothing. Frontier seems to run on the default dosbox configuration.

But if you don't know how to even start it, full tutorial:

First of all, download Frontier from here:

http://web.archive.org/web/20080708053302/http://www.eliteclub.co.uk/download/frontier.zip

Create on your C: drive a new folder called "dos", unpack the zip file to that directory.

Start dosbox, type:

mount c c:\dos
c:
cd frontier
frontier

Done

I would change output from surface to overlay in configuration file.

Frontier runs bad on surface and produces a lot of visual artefacts.

I simply run good ol' Norton Commander in my DOSBox.

Thats a blast from the past

Does Norton Commander still work? I'll have to have a play with it and see if I remember any of it.

Well, I don't know if there are any means of obtaining it - I've found it on an old floppy with unreadable, peeling off and possibly mouldy label lying forgotten on a dusty shelf, but if you happen to not be in possession of such floppy, there seems to be a number of clones, like Dos Navigator, which, as I've just verified, runs perfectly in 'Box.

Configure any such program to run on 'Box boot via autoexec section of configuration file and you're set.

ffe with dosbox

i uploadet a zip, configured to use for ffe with dos-box here.
you only have to copy dosbox0.73 and all sound, music and video files to the existing setup. read instructions attached to.
i hope you find it useful.

btw. i've encountered a strange graphical behave when i play ffe through dosbox, if you switch to turret view the stars and space dust producing "tails" so that the screen gets filled after a short time by them (looks really weird).

oops, output setting, yes.
but depends on your machine/graphic card
some settings work well, some only blurred, some crash when you switch from fullscreen to desktop, but on a other graphic card it could act complete different (i know because i had a ati before and now a g-force, usually g-force don't likes switching from fs to desktop).
so you have to figure that out by yourself, take default.conf as guide for possible values.

another way would be the use of a virtual machine like suns "VirtualBox". you have to create a image of a working windows version but therefore you can use all your old favorite games/progs in this virtual machine.

get yourself a cd32 and find a copy of fe2, connect to tv, enjoy and forget all this pc crap :D
